Celtic FC Fails to Overturn Scottish Cup Stadium Ban
The club expressed deep disappointment after the Scottish FA upheld a ban requiring Celtic to play their next home cup match behind closed doors.
Celtic Football Club has reacted with strong criticism after the Scottish FA partially upheld an appeal regarding sanctions stemming from crowd disturbances earlier this year. While the appeal removed the threat of a suspended secondary stadium closure and a financial compensation payment, Celtic must still play their next home Scottish Cup fixture behind closed doors.
The disciplinary measures follow a turbulent Scottish Cup quarter-final match against Rangers at Ibrox Stadium, where supporters from both clubs entered the field of play following a penalty shootout. Security forces and stewards intervened to prevent further escalation as ugly scenes unfolded after the final whistle.
In response to the ruling, Celtic released a statement expressing frustration over the outcome. "While we recognise that our appeal has been partially upheld, we remain extremely disappointed by this excessive and disproportionate punishment relating to an incursion by supporters at a moment of emotion and celebration," the club stated.
Celtic continued to challenge the fairness of the disciplinary process, arguing that the governing body drew an unfair comparison between the actions of the two fan bases. The club pointed out that an independent stadium safety review highlighted distinct differences in behavior between the supporters, describing Celtic fans as entering the pitch in jubilation rather than confrontation.
Furthermore, Celtic emphasized that they held no responsibility for the safety arrangements at Ibrox Stadium, a factor they believe officials disregarded when determining the penalties. "Additionally, the fact that Celtic Football Club had no responsibility for stadium safety arrangements also seems to have been disregarded in establishing these sanctions," the club added.
Rangers also pursued an appeal with the Scottish FA, resulting in their immediate stadium closure remaining in place while their suspended supplementary sanctions were dropped. Despite the partial relief for both clubs, Celtic maintains that the punishment fails to accurately reflect the distinct circumstances, differing behaviors, and specific venue responsibilities associated with the incident.
