Ducati Manager Defends Marc Marquez Amid Qatar Grand Prix Safety Debate
Ducati Team Manager Davide Tardozzi criticized other riders for staying silent during official meetings regarding upcoming races in Qatar.
Ducati Team Manager Davide Tardozzi has strongly defended Marc Marquez, criticizing fellow MotoGP riders who remain silent during discussions with race officials while privately expressing harsh opinions. The controversy arose ahead of the scheduled Grand Prix in Qatar, which faces uncertainty due to ongoing regional conflict in the Gulf that has persisted since February.
During the Australian Grand Prix weekend at Phillip Island, riders held a private meeting to discuss their travel plans and formulate demands for safety guarantees from event organizers. When questioned by reporters on Thursday, defending champion Marc Marquez declined to comment, a reaction that led some to interpret his silence as a personal reluctance to travel to the event.
Tardozzi firmly dismissed those assumptions in an interview with Sky Italy, asserting that Marquez acted intelligently by spearheading demands for clear safety protocols. According to the Ducati manager, Marquez is the most charismatic figure on the grid and simply requested proper evacuation plans and backup measures to protect the riders.
Tardozzi expressed frustration that other competitors who privately voiced much stronger opposition lacked the courage to speak up when facing the organizers directly. "There are many riders who out there throw opinions around much more firmly than Marc, but when it arrives inside the meeting in front of the organizers, they just stay quiet," Tardozzi stated, adding that blaming Marquez for advocating safety measures is entirely unfair.
While the safety discussions continue off the track, Marquez remains locked in a high-stakes championship battle. Having matched Valentino Rossi's career milestone of nine world titles—including seven in the premier class—Marquez holds a 10-point lead in the championship standings over rival Jorge Martin.
Reflecting on the fierce competition, rider coach Fonsi Nieto noted that the motivation to eclipse Rossi's historic records continues to drive Marquez forward through rigorous training despite numerous severe injuries. Nieto also highlighted that Marquez's primary vulnerability lies in his ego, noting that aggressive maneuvers and tight block passes from competitors can occasionally get under his skin and provoke errors.
With preparations for the Qatar Grand Prix moving forward, the focus remains on event organizers to provide the security guarantees requested by the riders. Tardozzi emphasized that Marquez and his peers simply want assurance that comprehensive safety plans are in place before committing to the journey.
