A driver who led police officers on a high-speed chase along the A303 before crashing has been sentenced to 12 months in prison. Ben Marchant, a resident of Southampton, stole a Vauxhall Insignia from a property in Ludgershall on April 21.

Wiltshire Police officers spotted the stolen automobile traveling eastbound on the A303 during the early morning hours. As law enforcement approached and activated their emergency blue lights, Marchant accelerated and attempted to flee.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson detailed the incident, stating that a pursuit was authorized and the vehicle reached speeds exceeding 100 mph prior to crashing at the junction for Barton Stacey. Marchant was subsequently arrested at the scene.

Authorities charged the driver with failing to stop, dangerous driving, theft of a vehicle, and possession of a class B drug. In addition to his 12-month custodial sentence, Marchant was disqualified from driving for five years and ordered to pay a £228 surcharge.

PC Tom Webster from the Wiltshire Police Roads Policing Unit highlighted the severe dangers of the incident. He noted that the driver operated the automobile well in excess of 100 mph, placing himself and other motorists at risk of severe injury or worse.

Webster explained that the suspect could not control the automobile at such high speeds. While attempting to exit the A303, the vehicle crashed directly into a hedgerow located on the slip road.

Concluding his remarks on the footage released by law enforcement, Webster emphasized that the video is remarkably shocking and demonstrates total disregard for the safety of others. He expressed satisfaction that the courts issued a robust custodial sentence and a lengthy driving disqualification.
