DNA Evidence Links Serial Killer Ted Bundy to 1974 Utah Murder of Melissa Ann Smith
Investigators used forensic advances and evidence from another recent cold-case match to close the 52-year-old investigation.
Authorities in Utah announced that modern DNA technology has officially linked notorious serial killer Ted Bundy to the 1974 murder of 17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith. The breakthrough resolves a cold case that went unanswered for more than five decades after hunters discovered the teenager's body in a wooded area along the border of Salt Lake and Summit counties on October 27, 1974.
Smith, who was the daughter of a local police chief, suffered severe trauma before her death, with investigators finding evidence that she had been tortured and raped. For generations, detectives sought answers to determine who was responsible for the killing, but the inquiry stalled until forensic techniques evolved enough to reexamine biological traces preserved by evidence custodians decades ago.
The critical development followed another major breakthrough earlier this year involving Laura Ann Aime, another 17-year-old victim who disappeared on Halloween in 1974. Utah authorities confirmed in April that Bundy was responsible for Aime's death. Detectives then applied the same DNA profile and forensic evidence obtained during the Aime inquiry to Smith's case, allowing officials across neighboring jurisdictions to establish a conclusive match.
During a Tuesday press conference detailing the findings, Utah County Sergeant Mike Reynolds said that investigators continue to review other unsolved files possibly tied to the serial killer. "With every case closure may we stomp the memory of Ted Bundy out," Reynolds said.
Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera commended past investigators for meticulously safeguarding crime scene materials over the years, noting that the outcome "demonstrates the need to preserve evidence even when decades pass." Rivera emphasized that the resolution provides renewed hope for families waiting for answers in other unresolved homicides, adding, "Every single day forensics is changing and we have the ability to take a look at these cases again and again."
The case highlights broader efforts across Utah, where forensic analysts continue working through a deep backlog of historical files. According to figures previously cited by the Utah Bureau of Forensic Services, the state has logged hundreds of unsolved death investigations, including 258 unresolved homicides out of 444 open inquiries.
Bundy remains one of the most infamous criminals in American history, carrying out attacks throughout the 1970s across states including Washington, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, and Florida. Often relying on superficial charm and ruses such as faking injuries or appearing helpless, Bundy deceived young women into letting down their guard before abducting, assaulting, and killing them in isolated locations.
First apprehended in 1975 for an attempted kidnapping and sentenced to 15 years in prison, Bundy staged an escape in 1977 by leaping from a prison library window. He was recaptured eight days later but managed to escape custody once more later that year, resuming his killing spree until his final arrest in 1978. Bundy was executed in Florida's electric chair in 1989 for the 1978 murders of two students at Florida State University's Chi Omega sorority house.
Prior to his execution, Bundy confessed to approximately 30 murders, including admitting to killing two teenage girls in Utah, although law enforcement officials have long suspected his actual victim count is significantly higher. Decades after his execution, ongoing advances in genetic analysis continue to verify the full scope of his crimes and bring long-delayed closure to grieving families.
