Digital Banks and Neobrokers Expand in Austria with Local IBANs
Neobanks and digital platforms are increasingly adopting local operations and automated tax compliance to capture market share.
Digital financial platforms and neobrokers are accelerating their expansion into Austria by establishing local branch offices, introducing regional international bank account numbers (IBANs), and automating capital gains tax deductions. This strategic shift aims to resolve long-standing regulatory hurdles and position these digital entities as primary banking institutions for everyday consumers.
A prominent example of this movement is Revolut, which recently completed the registration of its Austrian subsidiary and surpassed 500,000 customers in the country, doubling its user base in just two years. The digital bank announced that local IBANs and automated withholding of the 25 percent capital gains tax on savings accounts will roll out beginning in the first half of 2027.
Despite these advancements, certain financial instruments remain outside the scope of local tax automation. According to market analyses, while core accounts and savings products transition to the new Austrian entity, equities and exchange-traded funds continue to be managed through separate international corporate structures. Consequently, investors still bear the responsibility of manually reporting dividends and capital gains on their local tax returns.
The push toward localized integration reflects a broader industry trend among digital-first financial service providers. Competitors such as Trade Republic began handling the capital gains tax directly via an Austrian branch earlier, and other digital platforms have similarly established physical and legal presences in Vienna to streamline regulatory oversight under the Austrian Financial Market Authority and the central bank.
In parallel developments across the broader financial sector, asset management firms are restructuring their distribution channels to cater more effectively to institutional clients, wealth managers, and neobrokers. Major financial institutions are refining their coverage models to address the complex demands of tech-driven platforms and high-net-worth investors.
The evolution of these digital banking and investment models highlights how technology-driven finance continues to reshape traditional European banking markets. By bridging the gap between digital convenience and local regulatory compliance, neobanks are steadily narrowing the distance between online-only services and conventional financial institutions.
