The digital document repository DigiLocker is playing an increasingly vital role across multiple public sectors in India, ranging from university identity management and competitive examination registrations to upcoming artificial intelligence advancements. The platform allows citizens to securely store, access, and share official documents electronically, carrying legal equivalence to physical originals under the Information Technology Act.

In the higher education sector, Lucknow University recently became the first state university in the country to upload QR code-based digital identity cards, known as vCards, for all 21,268 students of the 2026-27 academic session. According to Uttar Pradesh Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay, the initiative aims to reduce paperwork, save time, and prevent fraud. Students can access these digital credentials on their smartphones at any time, eliminating the need for physical plastic cards.

The digital ID cards are linked directly to the university's database and students' Academic Bank of Credits-related APAAR IDs. The system features automatic deactivation once students complete their programs and allows individuals to scan QR codes for campus facility access, including libraries, hostels, and sports complexes.

Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has integrated DigiLocker into the application process for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2027 Session 1. Through the MeriPehchaan national single sign-on platform, applicants can utilize DigiLocker for identity verification and streamlined registration. Candidates have until November 22, 2026, to submit their application forms for the upcoming January examinations.

Job aspirants and students utilizing DigiLocker for government examinations must distinguish between officially issued documents and self-uploaded files. Documents fetched directly from participating government departments and educational institutions carry official verification, whereas scanned copies uploaded independently to the DigiLocker Drive do not automatically qualify as officially issued proof.

In technological developments, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has awarded Bengaluru-based CoRover a contract to build a unified artificial intelligence assistant and bot platform. Under this project, DigiLocker is set to serve as the first government service utilizing the agentic AI framework.

The minimum viable product will be delivered during a four-month implementation phase, managed by the National e-Governance Division. The conversational platform will allow users to fetch and share authentic documents using natural language interfaces while incorporating strict AI governance layers, such as prompt-injection defenses and tool-argument validation.
