Grok Releases Seven-Minute Odyssey Adaptation Created by Artificial Intelligence
Elon Musk's AI chatbot has unveiled an initial installment of Homer's epic poem, falling short of his promise for a full-length feature film.
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, released a seven-minute adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic The Odyssey, three months after Musk pledged to produce a full-length, historically accurate movie using AI. The video was published on October 23 through the Grok Imagine account on the social media platform X, where the company presented it as the first episode of an episodic series rather than a complete feature film.
The project was developed in collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. In July, Musk announced that Grok would produce a feature-length film of The Odyssey before the end of 2026, claiming the AI-generated movie would remain historically accurate and faithful to the original text. That announcement followed Musk's public criticism of Christopher Nolan's live-action adaptation, particularly taking issue with the director's casting choices.
Nolan's live-action adaptation, released in July, was a major box-office success and relied heavily on practical filmmaking and physical sets across six countries. In contrast, the Grok Imagine project debuted with a significantly shorter runtime that focuses on the initial preparations for the Trojan War and the departure of Odysseus, including a sequence where Penelope gives her husband a small wooden toy horse before he leaves for battle.
The release of the seven-minute video drew mixed reactions from viewers and critics alike. While some observers noted that certain individual shots, particularly sequences showing ships at sea, featured surprising realism, others heavily criticized the production. Critics pointed to lengthy narration, stiff dialogue, unnatural character movements, and a lack of emotional engagement that resembled video game cutscenes rather than traditional cinema.
Furthermore, commentators noted several deviations from historical and literary accuracy, observing that the characters spoke English rather than ancient Greek and that the storyline showed Greek troops landing in Troy earlier than in Homer's original narrative. Social media users also mocked the visual style, pointing out that characters exhibited overly retouched skin and flawless teeth typical of AI-generated imagery.
The shift from a feature-length movie to a seven-minute episodic release leaves uncertainty regarding the future of the project. Grok Imagine has not confirmed how many total episodes are planned or whether they will eventually be compiled into a complete film. For now, the project remains far short of Musk's original timeline, prompting questions about the current capabilities of artificial intelligence in producing compelling long-form storytelling.
