Demonstrations across Germany turn violent after peaceful youth protests

While tens of thousands participated in organized youth demonstrations, evening clashes, looting, and fireworks in cities like Frankfurt and Cologne led to dozens of arrests and police injuries.

Large-scale youth demonstrations organized by the initiative 'Gen Z regelt' across Germany turned violent on Saturday evening, resulting in clashes with law enforcement, property damage, and numerous arrests. While daytime marches focusing on education funding, cost of living, and climate change remained largely peaceful and drew tens of thousands of participants, the situation deteriorated significantly after nightfall in several major urban centers.

In Frankfurt am Main, an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 demonstrators initially gathered for a peaceful march that started at Mainkai. However, the atmosphere soured as evening approached. According to Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck, roughly 100 left-wing extremist agitators mingled with the crowd, launching fireworks, bottles, and stones at police officers. The violence escalated into window smashing, rioting, and looting at local businesses, including shoe shops and a firearms store. Authorities deployed water cannons and the special operations command (SEK), leading to more than 30 preliminary arrests by Sunday morning.

Similar scenes unfolded in other cities. In Cologne, the police halted a planned demonstration route due to participants wearing face coverings and setting off pyrotechnics. Tension boiled over when crowds resisted police containment, resulting in objects, bottles, and e-scooters being thrown at officers around the cathedral plaza and surrounding streets. Cologne police later surrounded approximately 1,000 individuals for identity processing, seizing weapons and a Molotow cocktail from a suspect.

In Berlin, an afternoon gathering at the Brandenburg Gate organized by the initiative proceeded relatively smoothly with thousands in attendance. Later in the evening, however, a separate demonstration near Hackesche Höfe drew a larger, more tense crowd that engaged in bottle and stone throwing. Berlin police reported that 27 officers sustained minor injuries, and nearly 60 people were temporarily detained amid overlapping incidents tied to Halloween celebrations.

Other cities experienced localized disruptions. In Hamburg, black-clad and partially masked individuals pulled up construction barriers and set them on fire near the central station. Police forces in cities such as Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, and Aachen also intervened after participants deviated from routes or ignited pyrotechnics, though many other North Rhine-Westphalia towns like Essen and Münster reported largely orderly gatherings.

Organizers of 'Gen Z regelt' strongly condemned the violence and distanced themselves from the rioters. A representative speaking for the press team, who goes by the first name Amadeo, stated that they had no control over what transpired after the conclusion of the official rallies. Emphasizing that their movement stands strictly for peaceful protest and democratic values, the initiative announced plans to mobilize participants again for upcoming European-wide protests.

Police unions and regional officials provided mixed reviews of the operations. While praising the peaceful behavior of the overwhelming majority of young demonstrators during the daytime, law enforcement representatives criticized autonomous and masked groups for hijacking the protests. Security forces remained on high alert in multiple cities to prevent further unrest throughout the night.
