The Democratic Party achieved a sweeping victory in the United States midterm elections, capturing majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. With vote counting continuing, Democratic candidates reached 240 seats in the House, while expanding their presence in the Senate to 54 seats after flipping seven seats from the Republicans. The outcome severely limits the legislative maneuverability of President Donald Trump for the remainder of his term.

Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries announced his candidacy for Speaker of the House, positioning himself as a leader of change. Jeffries, who is poised to become the first Black speaker of the House, stated in a letter to colleagues that the American people demand significant change following the party's success.

The electoral shift prompted intense reactions and finger-pointing among conservative figures. Outgoing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the losses as an extinction-level event for the Republican Party. Meanwhile, Senator Thom Tillis criticized several administration policies and officials, arguing that mismanagement contributed directly to the party's defeat at the polls.

Wall Street responded positively to the political shift, with major stock indices surging. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 3.03 percent, or 1,569 points, to close at 53,356 points, marking its best trading session since April 2025. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also posted notable gains as investors processed the new congressional landscape.

As Democrats prepare to assume control of congressional committees in January, preparations are underway to launch extensive oversight investigations. Senate Foreign Relations Committee aides revealed that requests for document preservation have already been sent to private entities and administration officials regarding various policy decisions and international agreements.

In addition to congressional races, voters across the country decided numerous local ballot measures and constitutional amendments. In Washington and Denver, voters approved bans on the sale and distribution of foie gras. Meanwhile, voters in Idaho selected a 19th-century rifle as an official state symbol, subject to final legislative approval.

The midterm elections also marked historic milestones for diversity in public office, with projections indicating that transgender candidates were elected for the first time in six states, including conservative southern states such as Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.
