Midterm Elections Give Democrats Control of Congress Amid Economic and Foreign Policy Backlash
The Democratic Party secured majorities in both the House and Senate following a campaign heavily influenced by concerns over the cost of living and U.S. military involvement in Iran.
Democrats secured decisive majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate following the midterm elections on November 3, dealing a significant political setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. The outcome empowers the opposition party with greater influence over federal legislation and congressional oversight during the final two years of the presidential term.
Voter sentiment was heavily shaped by domestic economic pressures, particularly rising energy costs. The Trump administration's military strikes on Iran, launched on February 28, drew widespread voter backlash as regional tensions choked the Strait of Hormuz and drove average gasoline prices up by more than a third to $4.27. Political analysts noted that foreign policy quickly translated into domestic pain at the gas pump, alienating voters in critical areas.
Conservative commentators and political experts widely criticized the military campaign. Matt Walsh called the conflict against Iran 'the greatest political blunder in the last two decades at least,' while Mark Shanahan, a U.S. politics expert at the University of Surrey, observed that voters ultimately rejected an unnecessary hit to their wallets. Semiofficial Iranian state media outlets also mocked the administration over the Republican losses.
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk attempted to counter the shifting political momentum by donating a staggering $446 million to Republican candidates, marking the largest single sum ever contributed by an individual non-candidate in an American election. Despite the massive financial injection, Democrats flipped key Senate seats in states such as Texas, Kansas, and Iowa.
Following the results, Musk took to social media to address the outcome, writing, 'Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time.' During the campaign, Musk had actively supported candidates like Ken Paxton and directed personal criticism at Democratic candidate James Talarico in Texas. In his victory speech, Talarico responded to the immense spending by invoking the biblical story of David and Goliath.
President Trump also faced internal friction on election night during a live telephone interview on Fox News, where he criticized the network's polling and told presenters to find a better pollster. Trump argued that the network's numbers had been wrong for years and claimed that Fox News bore some responsibility for Republican losses by frequently featuring Democratic opposition figures.
As Washington prepares for a divided government, the newly empowered Democratic congressional majorities intend to push back against the administration's agenda. Meanwhile, officials and commentators continue to debate the long-term domestic and international fallout of the midterm results.
