Actor Dax Shepard recently opened up about his past relationship with Kate Hudson during an appearance on his podcast, Armchair Expert. Speaking with guests Sara and Erin Foster, Shepard recalled first meeting Hudson at a poker game hosted by her brother, Oliver Hudson, while she was still married to Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson. Despite knowing her marital status at the time, Shepard admitted he tried to impress her.

Shepard, who had been an admirer of Hudson since watching the film Almost Famous, noted that he gave her "111% of any charm I have" during that initial meeting. Although he left the card game expecting nothing to come of it, a subsequent dinner invitation in Malibu brought them back together. By that time, Hudson and Robinson had announced their separation, allowing Shepard another opportunity to pursue a romance.

The pair ultimately dated for about three months in 2007, quickly becoming inseparable. Sara Foster recalled that the relationship escalated rapidly, while Shepard humorously noted the significant amount of time they spent together. Sara also admitted she initially felt protective of Shepard, questioning Hudson about dating someone she considered a close friend, to which Hudson reportedly replied that Sara did not know him well enough.

Entering Hudson's personal life also exposed Shepard to an unfamiliar social environment. Having grown up in the Detroit area, he felt like an outsider when interacting with Hollywood circles due to Hudson's upbringing around established entertainment figures like Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. However, Erin Foster challenged his perception, recalling that Hudson's friends viewed Shepard as approachable, down-to-earth, and refreshing because he did not treat the actress with excessive caution.

The former couple previously addressed the reasons behind their eventual breakup during a 2019 episode of Armchair Expert. Both acknowledged that they shared good chemistry and made each other laugh, but ultimately realized they were at different stages in their respective lives and careers.

Shepard shared that professional insecurities at the time contributed to the strain on the relationship, as he worried about his career trajectory while watching Hudson secure prominent roles and higher earnings. Hudson herself admitted that she was not providing what Shepard needed and was making choices that did not prioritize the relationship. Today, Shepard is married to actress Kristen Bell, while Hudson has been engaged to musician Danny Fujikawa since 2021.
