Dameon Pierce Steps Up for Eagles Following Saquon Barkley Injury
Philadelphia running back Dameon Pierce saw an expanded workload during Monday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys after teammate Saquon Barkley exited early with a back injury.
Philadelphia Eagles running back Dameon Pierce assumed a larger share of the offensive workload during Monday night's 38-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys following an early exit by starting running back Saquon Barkley.
Barkley returned to action on Monday after missing time with a hamstring injury, playing 10 snaps through the first three quarters and carrying the ball on each of them while scoring a touchdown on the opening drive. However, after dealing with leg and back issues, Barkley eventually exited the game and was listed as questionable before being ruled out for the remainder of the contest.
As Barkley managed his snaps and later left the field, Pierce took over a significant portion of the backfield duties. Pierce finished the night with 14 rushing attempts for 47 yards and a touchdown, alongside one reception for one yard. He also contributed on special teams by returning two kickoffs for 37 yards.
Pierce opened the matchup in a clear secondary role behind Barkley. Yet, with Barkley navigating both hamstring and back issues moving forward, Pierce could find himself stepping back into the top role as the Eagles prepare for a Week 8 road matchup against the Washington Commanders on Sunday night.
In addition to handling offensive carries, Pierce has been utilized in the team's return game. Following a knee injury to return specialist Britain Covey during the first quarter against Dallas, Pierce and Elijah Mitchell took over kickoff return duties for Philadelphia.
Pierce's increased involvement on Monday highlights his evolving role within the Eagles' offense as the team deals with injuries to key skill-position players. Further updates on Barkley's health and the official status of Pierce moving toward the upcoming weekend game are expected as practice reports are released.
