Cremonese Stuns Mantova with 2-0 Away Victory in Serie B Derby
Goals from Federico Bonazzoli and Marco Nasti lifted the visitors to a vital victory at Stadio Danilo Martelli.
Cremonese snapped a troubling slump and upset high-flying Mantova with a clinical 2-0 away victory at Stadio Danilo Martelli on Tuesday night. Entering the regional Serie B clash under heavy pressure following back-to-back defeats, manager Fabio Pecchia’s squad capitalized on critical defensive miscues and withstood relentless second-half pressure to secure three vital points in the ninth round of the campaign.
The visitors delivered a shock to the home crowd within the opening minute of action. Mantova goalkeeper Francesco Bardi committed an unforced error on an errant clearance, gifting possession directly to Belgian midfielder Jari Vandeputte. Vandeputte bypassed defender Bernardo Tomasevic along the flank and delivered a precise pass to Federico Bonazzoli, who converted cleanly past Bardi just fifty seconds after the opening whistle.
Falling behind so quickly forced Mantova, managed by Francesco Modesto, into an immediate offensive response. The Biancorossi established dominant control of the ball, forcing Cremonese to retreat deep into their own territory. Davide Bragantini forced a sharp stop from Cremonese goalkeeper Andrea Fulignati in the sixth minute, while striker Francesco Ruocco narrowly missed with a blistering effort from distance. Meanwhile, Cremonese suffered an early blow when defender Alessandro Vogliacco limped off with an injury in the thirteenth minute, prompting Sebastiano Luperto to take his place in central defense.
Modesto adjusted his tactical blueprint at the start of the second half, withdrawing target forward Ettore Gliozzi in favor of Rares Ilie to introduce greater speed and fluidity. The adjustments initially kept Cremonese pinned back, with Ruocco forcing Fulignati into an acrobatic diving save shortly after the restart. While Salvatore Elia had a potential second goal for Cremonese disallowed due to an offside call, Mantova continued to miss scoring chances, including a volley from Ilie that flew over the crossbar.
Cremonese remained dangerous on counterattacks and ultimately punished Mantova’s lack of finishing in the eightieth minute. After Vandeputte drew a difficult save from Bardi on a long-range strike, substitute Dachi Lordkipanidze floated a cross into the penalty box. Fellow substitute Marco Nasti rose above the defending line to direct a powerful header into the net, doubling the visitors' lead and extinguishing Mantova’s comeback hopes.
The closing minutes brought heightened tension when Cremonese defender Tommaso Barbieri was shown a second yellow card in the eighty-fourth minute for dragging down substitute Filippo Vesentini, leaving the visitors to defend with ten men. Despite Mantova pouring players into the penalty area during five minutes of stoppage time, Fulignati denied Vesentini in a one-on-one duel to preserve the clean sheet in front of 8,224 spectators.
The defeat marked Mantova’s second home loss of the season, dropping the club from second place down to fourth behind Modena and Ascoli in the Serie B table. For Cremonese, the result provided much-needed relief amid a difficult start that had seen them manage only five or six points through eight rounds depending on conflicting league tallies. While Modesto's team must quickly regroup ahead of an upcoming derby against Modena, Pecchia’s side hopes this defensive display will serve as a turning point in their season.
