Cole Knuble Scores First Two NHL Goals to Lead Flyers Past Sabres
The rookie forward recorded his first career multi-goal performance on Wednesday to secure a third straight victory for Philadelphia.
Cole Knuble scored his first two career NHL goals on Wednesday night, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at the KeyBank Center. Playing in just his second NHL game after making his debut earlier in the week against the Colorado Avalanche, the 22-year-old rookie delivered a standout performance to help the Flyers capture their third consecutive win.
The matchup began with heavy pressure from Buffalo, but Philadelphia capitalized on their offensive opportunities in the opening period. Knuble broke the ice at 14:49 of the first period by tracking down a rebound from an Oliver Bonk point shot and sliding a backhand past Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. The sequence marked a historic moment for the franchise, as Cole and his father, Mike Knuble, became the first father-son duo to score goals for the Flyers organization.
Philadelphia extended its lead before the first intermission during a power play. With 43 seconds remaining in the frame, Trevor Zegras batted a rebound out of midair following a shot from Matvei Michkov, pushing the advantage to 2-0 despite the Flyers being outshot 14-9 in the period. Goalie Dan Vladař anchored the defense early, stopping all 16 shots he faced in the opening frame.
The Sabres mounted a push in the second period, capitalizing on sloppy neutral-zone play from Philadelphia. Buffalo finally broke through in the final minute of the frame when Jason Zucker redirected a shot-pass from Jack Quinn past Vladař during a power play, cutting the deficit to 2-1 heading into the second intermission.
Any hopes of a Buffalo comeback were quickly dismantled early in the third period. Just over three minutes into the final frame, Bonk fed the puck to Knuble in the right circle. Knuble skated toward the net, faked a wraparound, and banked the puck in off Luukkonen's skate for his second goal of the night, securing a 3-1 lead that the Flyers protected for the remainder of the contest.
Vladař finished the evening with 27 saves to earn the win in net, while Bonk contributed a pair of primary assists on both of Knuble's goals. Despite being outshot 28-26 overall, Philadelphia's efficiency and strong goaltending preserved the road victory.
The win moves the Flyers to a 3-6-3 record following a difficult nine-game winless skid to begin the season. Philadelphia will now return home to host the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday afternoon at the Xfinity Mobile Arena.
