Clemson and Florida State clash in Tallahassee as injury pauses game

The Atlantic Coast Conference rivals meet in a primetime showdown while dealing with recent roster challenges and injury concerns.

Clemson and Florida State renewed their Atlantic Coast Conference rivalry in a primetime matchup in Tallahassee, Florida, featuring two programs seeking to regain consistency. The contest experienced a concerning moment in the second quarter when Clemson starting left guard Elyjah Thurmon sustained a head injury and was carted off the field.

The injury occurred during a run play on a first-and-20 situation. Thurmon joined a pile of players to assist running back Jarvis Green in gaining yardage when he absorbed a helmet-area hit from a Florida State defender. Trainers attended to the lineman while he briefly moved his arm, and a Clemson football spokesperson confirmed he was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for further evaluation, accompanied by his mother in the ambulance.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney provided a positive update to the ACC Network during the halftime broadcast, noting that Thurmon was responsive and moving. Thurmon, who previously suffered an injury earlier in the season against California, left sophomore Gavin Blanchard as the team's backup left guard.

Entering the weekend contest, both teams faced the challenge of reversing recent struggles. Florida State held a 3-4 record following consecutive losses to Louisville and Miami, the latter a grueling 43-35 double-overtime defeat before the team's bye week. Despite their record, the Seminoles entered the game averaging over 31 points per game behind quarterback Ashton Daniels, supported by running back Ousmane Kromah and wide receiver Duce Robinson.

Meanwhile, Clemson brought a 4-3 record into Doak Campbell Stadium after dropping a narrow 20-16 decision to Virginia Tech. The Tigers have faced offensive hurdles, averaging 21.4 points per contest, but relied on a formidable defense featuring standout defensive end Will Heldt to keep opponents to 21.3 points per game.

Historically, Clemson has maintained strong control over the series, winning nine of the last ten meetings against Florida State, including four straight victories in Tallahassee. However, both programs entered this primetime encounter looking to establish momentum for the remainder of the conference schedule.
