Chivas Defeats Atlante 4-2 to Climb to Provisional Top of Liga MX

Guadalajara secured a 4-2 victory against Atlante during the Jornada 15 matchup of the Liga MX Apertura 2026 tournament at Akron Stadium. With this crucial home win, Chivas reached 29 points in the standings, placing them provisionally at the top of the championship table ahead of the weekend's remaining fixtures.

The match began with Atlante taking the initiative in possession, but an early defensive miscue allowed Santiago Sandoval to capitalize in the eighth minute, fighting for a bouncing ball and scoring the opening goal for the home side. Guadalajara extended its lead in the 35th minute when a cross from Dani Aguirre deflected off Atlante defender Diogo Bagüí into the back of the net.

Despite dominating portions of possession, Atlante struggled to contain the clinical finishing of the rojiblancos. Shortly after the second half started, Sandoval headed home his second goal of the night following a precise pass from Efraín Álvarez, a play initially flagged for offside but subsequently overturned and validated by VAR.

Efraín Álvarez added a fourth goal for Chivas in the 65th minute with a skillful individual effort, weaving past two defenders before slotting a crossed shot past goalkeeper Óscar Jiménez. Atlante fought back as Martín Sarrafiore capitalized on a defensive error during a throw-in to score in the 60th minute, and Jhojan Julio converted a penalty kick in the 83rd minute following a VAR review.

The final whistle confirmed the 4-2 scoreline, cementing a strong performance by Gabriel Milito's squad. The triumph allowed Chivas to momentarily surpass América in the standings, placing pressure on their rivals as the regular season approaches its final stretch.

For Atlante, directed by Miguel Herrera, the defeat sealed their elimination from the tournament. Despite leaving players committed on the pitch until the final minutes, the team fell short of the necessary points to sustain their mathematical hopes of reaching the Liguilla.

Chivas will now look toward their final fixtures of the regular phase against León and Cruz Azul as they aim to secure the top spot heading into the postseason. Meanwhile, the visiting team must refocus following the disappointing result in Zapopan.
