Chiefs Fall to Broncos After Late Penalty Neglects Winning Touchdown
Head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes addressed the controversial call that erased a late score during Kansas City's 28-24 loss in Denver.
The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a tough 28-24 defeat against the Denver Broncos after a late-game penalty wiped out what would have been a game-winning touchdown in the final seconds. Trailing 28-24, the Chiefs appeared to snatch victory when Patrick Mahomes connected with Rashee Rice for a short touchdown pass with just four seconds remaining on the clock. However, the celebration was immediately cut short when officials threw a penalty flag for a false start on right tackle Jaylon Moore.
The officiating crew ruled that Moore had flinched just before the snap, pushing Kansas City back five yards from the one-yard line to the six-yard line. On the ensuing play, the Denver defense broke through to sack Mahomes on fourth down, sealing the divisional victory for the Broncos and handing the Chiefs their second loss of the season.
Following the hard-fought matchup, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid expressed skepticism regarding the validity of the call during his postgame press conference. Reid noted that while he observed head movement, he did not witness a true false start, describing the penalty as one person's opinion. Despite the coach's doubts, replay footage indicated that Moore visibly flinched as tight end Travis Kelce went in motion across the formation.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes also shared his perspective on the critical sequence, emphasizing that a team must ultimately accept whatever the officials decide on the field. Mahomes acknowledged that penalties often go uncalled in high-pressure moments, but pointed out that the Chiefs had multiple other chances to secure the victory throughout the afternoon.
Mahomes specifically highlighted a missed field goal attempt by kicker Harrison Butker and an offense that failed to generate points during the fourth quarter as contributing factors to the loss. Furthermore, Reid pointed to a broader issue with undisciplined play, noting that the Chiefs finished the contest with a total of 11 penalties resulting in 105 yards lost.
The costly defeat caused Kansas City to relinquish the lead in the AFC West division standings. The Broncos improved their record to 6-2 on the year, establishing a half-game advantage over the 5-2 Chiefs as the two conference rivals split their regular-season series heading into the second half of the campaign.
Before kickoff in Denver, Reid also made a notable last-minute adjustment to the starting lineup on the offensive line. Opting for a change from recent weeks, the head coach chose to start Mike Caliendo instead of Kingsley Suamataia at the position, marking only the second start of the campaign for Caliendo.
