Charlotte Hornets to Retire Muggsy Bogues' No. 1 Jersey
The 5-foot-3 point guard will become the shortest player in NBA history to have his number raised to the rafters.
The Charlotte Hornets announced Tuesday that they will retire the No. 1 jersey of franchise icon Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues. Standing at 5-foot-3, Bogues remains the shortest player ever to appear in the NBA. The organization confirmed that his banner will be hoisted into the rafters of Spectrum Center during a special halftime ceremony when Charlotte hosts the Milwaukee Bucks on February 11.
The honor will make Bogues the shortest player in NBA history to have his jersey retired, surpassing 5-foot-9 Hall of Fame guard Calvin Murphy, who previously held that distinction with the Rockets franchise. Bogues will also become only the third player in Hornets history to receive the tribute, joining his former teammates Bobby Phills, whose No. 13 was retired following his death in 2000, and Dell Curry, who currently works as a television analyst for the team and saw his No. 30 honored.
Bogues reflected with humor and gratitude on the irony of having his name elevated in the arena. "How ironic is that?" Bogues said. "After all those times that you felt like you were looking up, looking up for so many years, at people. Then here comes this particular moment, and when that jersey actually goes up it’ll be like I'm the one looking down at the entire world. It’s going to be a surreal moment." He added that receiving such recognition from an organization and city that embraced him meant the world to him and his family.
Selected 12th overall by the Washington Bullets out of Wake Forest in the 1987 NBA Draft—one spot behind Hall of Famer Reggie Miller—Bogues began his professional career sharing the floor with 7-foot-7 center Manute Bol. Washington subsequently left him unprotected in the 1988 expansion draft, enabling the newly established Hornets to select him ahead of their inaugural campaign. That move cemented Bogues as a foundational pillar for basketball in the Queen City.
Bogues served as Charlotte's primary playmaker across the franchise's first 10 seasons, appearing in 632 games between 1988 and 1997. Alongside star teammates Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning, he helped anchor the most celebrated era in team history. Bogues guided the Hornets to three consecutive 50-win seasons and the organization's first postseason series victory in 1993. Over his 14-year NBA career, which also featured stints with Golden State and Toronto, he averaged 7.7 points and 7.6 assists, while holding a 4.69 career assist-to-turnover ratio that stands among the finest in league history. In Charlotte, he remains the all-time leader in assists and steals, tallying 1,067 takeaways.
During Bogues' playing era, the average NBA competitor measured 6-foot-7 and weighed 213 pounds. Despite being 16 inches shorter and nearly 80 pounds lighter than the typical opponent, he used relentless defensive pressure, exceptional speed, and elite court vision to command respect across the league. Hornets co-chairmen Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin praised his resilience in a joint statement, noting that he "played with a heart, toughness and competitive spirit that made him a fan favorite" while proving that physical stature does not dictate what athletes can achieve.
Following his retirement, Bogues established permanent roots in North Carolina, coaching Charlotte’s former WNBA franchise and leading local charitable endeavors. He also gained global fame outside of sports, most notably co-starring in the 1996 film "Space Jam." Today, Bogues continues to represent both the Hornets organization and the league worldwide as an ambassador. "I was just like any kid that had a dream," Bogues said. "I just kept believing and kept having success. And my mindset was, 'if you play against the best, and you have success against the best, you need to be included with the best.'"
