The municipality of Cerdedo-Cotobade came together on Monday to bid a final farewell to María del Carmen Vázquez Nieto, a 42-year-old architect who lost her life in the tragic train collision in Urda, Toledo. Scores of neighbors, relatives, and local leaders filled the parish of Figueroa and the church of San Martín de Figueroa to honor her memory during a solemn and emotional funeral service.

The process of bringing her home concluded over the weekend after days of difficult waiting and bureaucratic procedures. Vázquez Nieto was traveling to Seville for work on the high-speed AVE train that was involved in the accident. From the moment news of the crash broke, her parents and loved ones suspected she might be among the victims, as she frequently traveled in the front section of the train for her professional duties. Her death was officially confirmed on Saturday.

The funeral procession began on Monday afternoon, moving from the Cerdedo mortuary to the parish church and cemetery where she was laid to rest. The service was marked by quiet dignity, with mourners carrying white roses and maintaining a respectful silence to support her grieving parents, sister, and husband. Many attendees arrived well before the casket to offer condolences to the family.

Prominent regional and local figures attended the service to express their solidarity with the family, which is deeply rooted in the community. Among those present were Cerdedo-Cotobade Mayor Jorge Cubela, provincial vice president Rafa Domínguez, and Xunta territorial delegate Pablo Fernández, alongside former municipal officials and business leaders from the region. Mayor Cubela expressed profound sorrow on behalf of the local government, emphasizing the community's close ties to the family and stating that the municipality stands ready to support them with closeness and affection.

The tragedy has deeply affected the local population, prompting widespread mourning and solidarity. As institutional displays of grief unfolded across Spain, the local council observed a moment of silence to honor the victims of the crash and console the bereaved families.

Vázquez Nieto, who resided in Madrid and worked for Sanitas, had strong connections to the region, having spent parts of her youth and education in Pontevedra. She was the daughter of Enrique Vázquez Enjamio, a well-known local political figure and former councilman in Cerdedo. Her sudden passing has left a profound void among her colleagues, childhood friends, and the broader community that watched her grow up.
