Canadian Lottery Winner Claims $26 Million Jackpot Just Hours Before Expiration

A Lotto Max ticket purchased in Ontario nearly expired before the lucky player stepped forward to collect the massive prize.

A lottery player in Ontario, Canada, narrowly avoided losing a life-changing fortune by stepping forward to claim a 26 million euro jackpot just hours before the ticket's validity expired. The winning Lotto Max ticket had been purchased at a retailer in Grey County on October 28, 2025.

Under Canadian lottery regulations, players are given exactly one year to claim their prizes. If unclaimed within that 365-day timeframe, the funds are redirected to future draws. The winner finally came forward on October 28, 2026, beating the final deadline by mere hours.

Because the ticket was purchased in a retail store rather than online, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation had no digital trail to identify the owner. As the deadline approached, officials launched public appeals, advising residents to check common hiding spots such as clothing pockets, purses, glove compartments, and desk drawers.

The lottery organization stated that approximately one percent of all prizes go unclaimed, though the vast majority of those uncollected amounts involve much smaller sums. Officials previously noted a less fortunate instance where a 45 million euro winning ticket from June 2022 was never claimed despite thousands of inquiries.

Lottery representatives emphasized that standard verification procedures must still be completed. "If the legitimate ownership is confirmed, we will organize a celebration in honor of the winner and share their story with the media and the public as part of our winner disclosure process," organizers explained.

At this stage, the identity of the winner and the reasons behind the lengthy delay remain undisclosed. With the ticket successfully validated just in time, the dramatic countdown has come to a close.
