Bus Crash in Eastern France Leaves Two Dead and Several Injured
An interurban bus carrying dozens of passengers veered off the road and struck a tree in the town of Lent, prompting a major emergency response.
A tragic bus crash in eastern France left two people dead and numerous others injured on Friday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 07:00 local time in the town of Lent, located roughly 34 miles from the Swiss border, as the vehicle traveled between Lyon and Bourg-en-Bresse.
According to authorities, the bus was carrying a total of 43 passengers, including 15 children. While initial reports referred to it exclusively as a school bus, officials clarified that it operated on an interurban route carrying various travelers alongside schoolchildren.
Yves Cristin, the mayor of Lent, described the immediate aftermath to local media. "I arrived minutes after the accident and people were in shock," he said, adding that the bus "left the road and hit a tree in the ditch." He noted that the side of the vehicle was severely torn off by the impact.
The Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor's office confirmed that a 7-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man died in the crash, though some initial official reports varied slightly regarding the exact ages. At least 16 other individuals sustained injuries, with varying reports placing between three and four victims in critical condition.
Emergency services launched a massive response, deploying more than 100 firefighters, 50 gendarmes, and medical helicopters to airlift the most severely wounded to specialized hospitals. The local town hall opened its community hall to shelter uninjured passengers and coordinate relief efforts.
The 26-year-old driver of the bus sustained injuries and was hospitalized, meaning police had not yet been able to question him regarding the cause of the crash. The prosecutor's office announced an official investigation into the incident on charges of road homicide and aggravated road traffic injuries.
Investigators and government officials traveled to the scene to assess the situation. French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot stated that the vehicle was in very good condition and had passed all inspections, while noting that preliminary drug and alcohol screenings performed on the driver returned negative results.
Weather conditions at the time of the accident featured light fog and a wet road surface, though local leaders emphasized that there were no major driving hazards present. The prefecture activated its departmental operational center to manage the crisis response as investigations continue.
