Bus Crash in Beja Leaves Two Seriously Injured and Driver Dead
Two 70-year-old passengers remain in critical condition following a bus rollover in southern Portugal.
A severe bus accident occurred on Friday along the National Road 260 near Baleizão, in the district of Beja, resulting in one fatality and leaving two passengers with critical injuries. The vehicle, operated by Rede Expressos, had departed from Vila Verde de Ficalho with Lisbon as its destination when it veered off the road and overturned at kilometer 16.
First responders and medical personnel confirmed that the driver, a man around 50 years of age, died at the scene. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash, with the primary hypothesis suggesting that the driver may have suffered a sudden medical emergency prior to the vehicle leaving the roadway. No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the incident.
The two critically injured passengers are a 70-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman, both residents of the Serpa region. According to hospital officials, both individuals suffered severe injuries that necessitated amputations at the accident site before they were transported to the Hospital of Beja.
Medical teams successfully performed surgeries on both patients following their arrival at the hospital. Post-operation, one of the patients was transferred to the intensive care unit, while the other was admitted to the surgical care unit. Both victims continue to fight for their lives and remain in critical condition.
In addition to the critical injuries and the fatality, the crash caused minor injuries to several other passengers on board the bus. These individuals received prompt medical evaluation and treatment at the hospital and have since been discharged.
Local authorities and emergency services concluded initial operations at the scene as investigations into the precise cause of the rollover continue. The tragedy has drawn significant attention to passenger safety and the welfare of long-distance transit drivers operating across the region.
