Buccaneers Rout Panthers 43-13 as Baker Mayfield Returns
Tampa Bay forced four turnovers and dominated on the ground to secure a decisive victory in Charlotte.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Carolina Panthers 43-13 on Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina, backed by a dominant rushing attack and a relentless defense that forced four turnovers. Bucky Irving led the ground game with 106 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Sean Tucker added a 46-yard scoring run as the Buccaneers improved to 2-5 on the season.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield returned to action after missing the previous three games due to a dislocated right thumb. Wearing a protective glove, Mayfield attempted just 11 passes and threw for 64 yards. Despite the limited output, the performance was enough for him to improve his career record against the Panthers to 7-1, including a 6-1 mark since joining Tampa Bay.
The Buccaneers established control early by winning the coin toss and marching 70 yards in 14 plays, capped by Irving's four-yard touchdown run. Tampa Bay's special teams and defense continuously compounded Carolina's struggles. Al-Quadin Muhammad recorded a strip-sack of Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, allowing Calijah Kancey to return the fumble 32 yards for a touchdown.
Young endured a difficult afternoon under center for Carolina, which dropped to 3-3. He was sacked five times, completed 14 of 27 passes for 163 yards, and threw two interceptions in addition to his lost fumble. Even when the Panthers found occasional success—such as a 50-yard touchdown pass from Young to Darren Waller—subsequent errors quickly erased the momentum. Following that score, Tampa Bay blocked the extra point and Zyon McCollum returned it 70 yards for a two-point defensive conversion.
Special teams also capitalized on a muffed punt by Carolina's David Moore, helping the Buccaneers build a commanding 33-6 lead by halftime. During the intermission, the Panthers honored former middle linebacker Luke Kuechly, who received his Hall of Fame ring after hitting the traditional "Keep Pounding" drum before kickoff.
The victory was tempered by injuries for both squads. Tampa Bay running back Kenny Gainwell briefly exited in the second half with a hip injury before returning to finish with 88 yards on 14 carries. Meanwhile, Carolina right tackle Taylor Moton, who had already missed the first four games of the season due to blood clots in his lung, was carted off the field in the third quarter with a left ankle and fibula injury.
Following the rout, the Buccaneers prepare to return home to host the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The Panthers will look to rebound quickly as they travel to face the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.
