Brandenburg Holds Annual Memorial Service for Deceased Emergency Personnel
State leaders and clergy gathered in Potsdam to honor emergency workers who passed away during their active professional lives over the past year.
State leaders, clergy, and members of the community gathered on Saturday at the St. Nicholas Church in Potsdam for the annual memorial service dedicated to fallen and deceased emergency personnel. The traditional service, known locally as the "Blaulichtgottesdienst" or blue-light service, honored 104 individuals from fire departments, police forces, emergency medical services, and disaster relief organizations who died during their active professional lives over the previous year.
The interior ministry later clarified that while these individuals were active in their careers, none of them lost their lives directly while on active duty. The total number of deceased personnel included 85 firefighters, 10 active police officers, seven employees from rescue services or aid organizations, and two emergency pastoral care workers.
Brandenburg Minister President Dietmar Woidke attended the commemorative event to express his sympathy and appreciation for the region's public safety workers. He emphasized the vital role these professionals play in maintaining societal safety, often at great personal risk.
"Our firefighters, police officers, and rescue workers are always there when others need help. They protect, rescue, and give us all security — often at the expense of their own health and their own lives," Woidke stated in a released statement.
State Interior Minister Jan Redmann also praised the dedication of the workforce, noting that their commitment went far beyond standard job requirements. He stated that the personnel placed themselves in the service of society with immense courage, tireless effort, and deep compassion, viewing their work not merely as a job but as a true calling.
In addition to government officials, the service featured a sermon delivered by Christian Stäblein, bishop of the Protestant Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Schlesische Oberlausitz. Redmann also took the opportunity to express gratitude to the families of the emergency workers, acknowledging the unique burdens and hardships they bore alongside their working relatives.
Blue-light memorial services have been conducted for more than 25 years to support grieving families and honor the contributions of public safety workers. The St. Nicholas Church in Potsdam has hosted the annual commemorative gathering for the past seven years.
