Bangladesh suffers 99-run defeat against Zimbabwe in tri-nation ODI series opener

Pacer Taskin Ahmed described the batting collapse as a major reality check for the team.

Bangladesh began their tri-nation One Day International series with a disappointing 99-run loss to Zimbabwe at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, October 17. After a promising start with the ball, the team's batting lineup crumbled, getting bowled out for just 172 runs in 33.4 overs while chasing a target of 272.

The defeat marked Towhid Hridoy's debut as full-time ODI captain. The squad entered the tournament missing key batter Litton Das, who was ruled out due to a right hip joint injury. However, fast bowler Taskin Ahmed, who claimed three wickets in the match, refused to lean on Das's absence as an excuse for the team's poor performance.

"270 was definitely chaseable, at least against Zimbabwe," Taskin told reporters after the game. He added that the team failed to form any meaningful partnerships that could have steered them to victory, noting that mistakes continue to plague their batting innings.

Statistics highlight a troubling trend for Bangladesh, as they have now failed to successfully chase targets of 240 or more in eight of their last 10 innings when batting second. Taskin pointed out that while bowling consistency has seen some improvement, the batting unit must overcome its tendency to collapse quickly under pressure if the team aspires to grow.

"The problem is with consistency and it has been observed that we need to build this consistency and game awareness," Taskin explained, emphasizing that every player possesses the necessary skills but often lacks game awareness during high-pressure situations. He stressed that overcoming these mental and strategic hurdles is crucial for the squad's development.

Looking forward, Bangladesh faces a must-win situation in their upcoming fixture against Afghanistan on October 21 to keep their hopes of reaching the tournament final alive. Taskin expressed optimism that the team can regroup, correct their errors, and deliver a strong response in their next outing.

Addressing broader concerns regarding the team's away record—having not won a bilateral series away from home since defeating Ireland in Chelmsford in 2023—Taskin categorized the latest performance as a vital reality check. He underscored that individual successes are meaningless without collective team victories, calling for a synchronized effort across both batting and bowling departments.
