AS Monaco Hosts Nordsjaelland in UEFA Conference League Match
Folarin Balogun makes his first start of the season as Monaco looks to advance in Europe.
AS Monaco faces Danish side Nordsjaelland this Thursday at the Stade Louis-II in the third round of the UEFA Conference League. The match represents a significant opportunity for the French club to solidify its standing and advance toward the knockout stages of the competition.
Manager Filipe Luís has made notable adjustments to his starting lineup for the encounter. American forward Folarin Balogun, who recently replaced the injured Ansu Fati in the club's UEFA squad, is set to make his first start of the current season. Balogun’s inclusion follows a period of limited availability due to a knee injury and ongoing fitness recovery.
The defensive line will also feature a change, with Ilane Touré making his first professional start at right-back. The decision to field Touré is intended to provide rest for Vanderson, as the team manages its heavy schedule across multiple competitions. The starting eleven is rounded out by goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký, defenders Jordan Teze, Eric Dier, and Christian Mawissa, along with midfielders Edan Diop and team captain Denis Zakaria.
The squad rotation comes at a challenging time for Monaco domestically. After a strong start to the season under Filipe Luís, the team has struggled in Ligue 1, going winless in their last four league matches. Following a recent 3-1 defeat to Paris FC, Luís emphasized the need for tactical discipline, particularly regarding defensive positioning and pressing intensity.
"There are some behaviors that I need to correct," Luís stated ahead of the match. "Especially off the ball, some behaviors that we didn't protect much; we were very exposed. We go full in the press, and they have a lot of quality to break the press. We have to calm down a little bit." The manager noted that while the team's attitude remains high, the young squad must learn to balance their aggression with tactical patience.
The roster change involving Balogun was necessitated by Ansu Fati's injury. Fati, who suffered a thigh injury during a match against Lille on October 25, is expected to remain sidelined until the end of the year. Monaco utilized UEFA regulation Article 31.14.2, which permits clubs to replace players facing long-term injuries, to register Balogun for the European campaign. Fati remains with the club and continues his recovery process.
