Arizona Cardinals Name Gardner Minshew Starter as Carson Beck Moves to Backup
Following a successful comeback victory against the Dallas Cowboys, the Cardinals have shifted their quarterback depth chart.
The Arizona Cardinals have officially named Gardner Minshew as their starting quarterback moving forward, a decision confirmed by head coach Mike LaFleur on Monday. This change in leadership comes after Minshew led a dramatic 33-30 overtime comeback victory against the Dallas Cowboys, during which he threw three touchdown passes after entering the game in relief of Jacoby Brissett.
As part of the roster adjustment, rookie Carson Beck has been elevated to the backup quarterback position. Beck, who was the 65th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, has spent the season acclimating to the professional level. While he has yet to take a regular-season snap, his promotion to the number two spot places him one injury away from seeing the field for the remainder of the campaign.
The transition in the quarterback room also led to the departure of veteran Jacoby Brissett. Following his demotion to the third-string emergency role, the Cardinals finalized a trade to send Brissett to the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens, currently facing significant injury challenges at the position with both Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley sidelined, acquired Brissett to bolster their roster for the remainder of the season.
For the Cardinals, the decision to start Minshew reflects a desire to maintain competitiveness as the team looks to improve upon its 3-5 record. Coach LaFleur praised Minshew's preparation and performance, noting that the veteran's ability to move the offense effectively earned him the starting role. Minshew is set to lead the team in their upcoming matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
While Minshew currently holds the starting job, the organization remains interested in evaluating Carson Beck's potential. Having signed a contract that keeps him with the team through 2029, Beck is viewed as a significant long-term investment. LaFleur acknowledged the importance of seeing the rookie in action, stating that while the team does not need to rush his development, there is no substitute for real-game experience when evaluating a young quarterback.
The remainder of the season offers a critical window for the Cardinals to determine their future at the position. If the team falls further out of the playoff race, the coaching staff may prioritize giving Beck playing time to gather necessary data for the 2027 season. For now, however, the focus remains on Minshew's performance as he attempts to guide the team toward a potential postseason run.
