Alouettes and Argonauts to Rest Starters in Week 21 CFL Finale

Both teams are prioritizing player health and postseason preparation ahead of their upcoming playoff matchups.

The Montreal Alouettes and the Toronto Argonauts are set to square off in their final regular-season matchup of the Canadian Football League year, with both coaching staffs choosing to rest a significant portion of their regular starters. The Week 21 contest at BMO Field serves primarily as a preparatory step for the postseason, as both squads have already secured their playoff destinations.

The 13-4 Alouettes locked up the top spot in the East Division weeks ago and are using the game to manage player workload ahead of hosting the East Final on November 7. Backup quarterback Dustin Crum is scheduled to make his second consecutive start, stepping in for regular starter Davis Alexander as Montreal looks to maintain momentum without risking key personnel.

Meanwhile, the 9-8 Argonauts are also erring on the side of caution. Toronto head coach Mike Miller announced that over a dozen regular starters will sit out the season finale to ensure players are healthy and rested for the upcoming playoffs. Third-string quarterback Tucker Horn is slated to get the start at quarterback, backed up by Luis Perez and Nick Arbuckle.

The decision allows starting quarterback Chad Kelly additional time to recover from a lower-body injury sustained during the opening quarter of last week's loss to the Ottawa Redblacks. The Argonauts expect the 32-year-old Kelly to be fully ready for their home playoff game on Halloween against either the Saskatchewan Roughriders or the Calgary Stampeders.

Reflecting on the strategy to lean on depth players, Miller noted the importance of giving hardworking roster members an opportunity to gain valuable playing time. "We had to make some tough decisions and it wasn't easy, but I'm excited for these guys," Miller said. "They've earned it. I told them to go out and have fun, play hard."

Toronto returns to the postseason after finishing the previous year with a 5-13 record and missing out on defending their 2024 Grey Cup title. Despite navigating a challenging schedule that included playing their first seven games away from home due to the FIFA World Cup and managing numerous injuries, the Argos have secured a record of .500 or better heading into the final stretch.

As the regular season concludes, the focus for both the Alouettes and Argonauts shifts entirely to postseason execution. With resting starters returning fresh for the elimination rounds, both franchises hope that prioritizing health in Week 21 will pay dividends when the Grey Cup race intensifies next week.
