Al-Ittihad Faces Abha as Richard Ríos Suffers Early Injury Scare
Colombian midfielder Richard Ríos was forced off early during Al-Ittihad's Saudi Pro League match against Abha due to a left ankle injury.
Al-Ittihad traveled to face Abha at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Sports City Stadium in the twelfth round of the Saudi Roshn Pro League. Entering the match in fourth place with 23 points, Al-Ittihad looked to secure a crucial victory to keep pace with league leaders Al-Nassr and Al-Qadsiah, as well as third-placed Al-Hilal.
Technical director Jens Wissing made a bold tactical choice for the fixture, starting Moroccan striker Youssef En-Nesyri at the head of the attack while placing Nigerian forward George Ilenikhena on the bench. The starting lineup also featured Predrag Rajkovic in goal, alongside a defensive and midfield core including Danilo Pereira, Houssem Aouar, and Georginio Wijnaldum.
However, the match quickly brought concerning news for both the club and the Colombia national team. Midfielder Richard Ríos suffered an unfortunate left ankle injury just minutes into the contest when a teammate, Mukhtar Ali, collided during a challenge with an opponent who fell awkwardly onto Ríos's leg.
Left writhing in pain on the turf, the 26-year-old midfielder received immediate attention from the medical staff. He was stretchered off or helped from the field, unable to continue, and was replaced by Ahmed Al-Ghamdi.
The injury immediately sparked concern regarding his international status. Ríos had been named in the prelist for the upcoming Colombia national team friendlies scheduled against Chile in November. Medical evaluations and official club reports will determine the exact severity of the injury and the duration of his expected absence from the pitch.
On the opposing side, Abha entered the fixture facing immense pressure after struggling through a difficult start to the campaign with only two points from their first ten matches and three consecutive defeats. Forward Georges-Kevin N'Koudou provided a glimmer of hope for the struggling hosts, given his historical scoring record of four goals in four previous meetings against Al-Ittihad at the same stadium during his time with Damac.
While Al-Ittihad entered the match heavily favored on paper, individual matchups and unexpected fitness setbacks highlighted the unpredictable nature of the league encounter. Both clubs awaited further developments as the match progressed under the guidance of the technical staff.
