Vote Counting Underway in Maharashtra Legislative Council Elections
Election officials began counting votes across five graduate and teacher constituencies in Maharashtra as ruling and opposition alliances await crucial results.
Vote counting commenced on Tuesday morning for five key Legislative Council constituencies across Maharashtra, including graduate and teacher seats in Nagpur, Amravati, Pune, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The high-stakes elections feature a direct contest between the ruling Mahayuti coalition and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, alongside several independent candidates.
In the Nagpur graduate constituency, initial counts of postal ballots showed early leads for the incumbent Congress member and candidate Abhijit Vanjari over Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sudhakar Kohle. Election officials reported that out of 238 registered postal ballots in the Nagpur division, 34 were deemed invalid, leaving 204 valid votes. Valid postal counts recorded 101 votes for Vanjari, 86 for Kohle, and 22 for other candidates, though officials emphasized these early figures do not represent final outcomes.
The broader electoral process in Nagpur involved sorting through more than 165,000 total votes cast, utilizing 84 counting tables to bundle and verify ballots before preferential vote counts could proceed. Independent candidate Nitesh Karale expressed confidence in his prospects during the counting process, claiming strong public discontent against established political parties.
In the Amravati division teacher constituency, early rounds of counting placed Kiran Sarnaik of the Shiv Sena ahead of opponents, while Congress candidate Aditi Pohare lagged behind in the initial tallies. Electoral staff organized ballots into bundles across 14 tables, navigating multiple rounds of sorting to determine eligibility and quotas for preferential votes.
Contests in Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar also saw intense observation from party representatives, with officials carefully auditing postal votes and sorting thousands of ballots according to strict guidelines. In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for the Marathwada graduate seat, early postal counts indicated a tight margin among contenders including Satish Chavan and Dr. Pratapsinh Patil.
The current strength of the 78-member Maharashtra Legislative Council positions the BJP as the largest party with 35 members, alongside allies in the Mahayuti coalition. The outcome of these five contested seats is considered significant for the upper house's shifting political balance.
As the counting process continues through multiple rounds of preferential verification, election authorities have worked to maintain transparency and address procedural objections raised by candidates and party agents at various counting centers across the state.
