US Stocks Rebound as Oil Prices Drop Ahead of Earnings and Midterms
Major stock indexes edged higher at mid-session on Monday, supported by a significant decline in crude oil prices and a rotation into cyclical shares.
Major United States stock indexes traded higher during Monday's mid-session, staging a relief rally following a steep market plunge late last week. The S&P 500 Index (SPX) and other major benchmarks recovered some ground as position-squaring and short-covering took place ahead of a busy schedule of corporate earnings reports and upcoming midterm elections.
The primary catalyst behind the early market strength was a sharp drop in crude oil prices, which fell approximately six percent. Traders sold off crude oil amid optimism surrounding a potential peace resolution between the United States and Iran. President Trump stated over the weekend that he had not made a decision to take military action and would prefer a peaceful outcome.
Amid the broader market movements, sector rotation played a prominent role in the advance. Cyclical shares led the gains, with consumer discretionary, financials, industrials, and materials sectors outperforming. Several companies that experienced losses during the previous week, such as Amazon, Nvidia, and Alphabet, managed modest recoveries as investors rotated out of troubled technology names.
Despite the recent tech-driven sell-off, market analysts noted that overall market breadth continues to show signs of improvement. The proportion of S&P 500 constituents trading above their 50-day and 200-day moving averages has increased, even as major technology stocks faced pressure from disappointing earnings reports. Companies like Intel, Alphabet, Reddit, Twilio, and Roblox contributed significantly to the technology sector's recent woes.
Volatility indicators reflected a relatively muted response to the equity sell-off. The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) experienced intraday spikes above 22.00 but ultimately closed well below that threshold. Analysts pointed out that the 22.00 level has consistently capped multiple VIX advances throughout the year, suggesting limited immediate risk for bears while portfolio insurance buyers adjust their positions.
Looking ahead, investors are closely monitoring upcoming corporate earnings, including reports from Apple, McDonald's, and Qualcomm. Technical analysts continue to track critical support and resistance levels for the S&P 500 as market participants weigh macroeconomic uncertainties, upcoming midterm elections, and ongoing sector-specific developments.
