Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon was awarded the Yashin Trophy for the best male goalkeeper in the world during the Ballon d'Or ceremony held in London on Monday night. Simon triumphed following a stellar season highlighted by his performances for Spain, culminating in a World Cup victory where he secured the Golden Glove.

During the tournament, the Athletic Club shot-stopper set a new historical record by going 649 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal across seven matches, surpassing the previous record of 517 minutes held by Italian legend Walter Zenga since 1990. Simon conceded only a single goal throughout the entire competition, which came during the quarterfinals against Belgium.

The voting for the Yashin Trophy featured a strong Spanish presence at the top of the rankings. David Raya finished in second place after an impressive club campaign with Arsenal, while Real Madrid's Thibaut Cornwall claimed the third spot. Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov placed fourth, and Argentina's Emiliano "Dibu" Martinez finished fifth after securing consecutive victories in the award's 2023 and 2024 editions.

Expressing his gratitude during an emotional acceptance speech in London, Simon acknowledged the support of his family, friends, and coaches throughout his career. "It is an honour to be here receiving this award. It would be impossible to have received it without the support of many people, including my parents and my brother... and my girlfriend, who represents that oasis of tranquility in this chaotic world," he stated.

Simon also reflected on his journey and the deep connection he feels with Athletic Club, noting how the club and its legendary figures have shaped his career. He surpassed the international appearance record of his childhood idol and club legend Jose Angel Iribar, whom Simon regards as an unmatched reference in football history. Club president Jon Uriarte and general director of football Mikel Gonzalez accompanied the goalkeeper at the gala.

The recognition adds another prestigious individual honor to Simon's career, following his Zamora Trophy win in the 2023-24 La Liga season. With his latest accolade, the Spanish national team continues a dominant tradition in international goalkeeping, further solidified by Cata Coll winning the women's Yashin Trophy at the same ceremony.
