Ukrainian Drones Strike Major Lukoil Oil Refinery in Russia's Kstovo
An overnight wave of long-range drone strikes triggered large fires at the strategic refinery and a nearby power plant in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
A massive wave of long-range Ukrainian drones targeted a major Russian oil refinery and a nearby combined heat and power plant in the city of Kstovo, located in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region, triggering multiple large fires across the strategic industrial complex. The facility, operated by Russian oil major Lukoil, is one of the country's largest petroleum refining enterprises and plays a critical role in supplying fuel to both domestic markets and military logistics.
Local residents began sharing footage on social media showing large blazes lighting up the skyline around 4:00 a.m. local time, accompanied by the sounds of low-flying drone engines and repeated explosions. Open-source intelligence monitors and local channels reported that the incoming unmanned aerial vehicles successfully penetrated local air defenses, causing simultaneous fires in several operational sections of the facility.
Gleb Nikitin, the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, confirmed that the area faced a massive aerial assault involving more than one hundred drones. The governor stated that an industrial enterprise in the Kstovo district sustained significant damage, while assessments regarding civil infrastructure and potential property impacts remained ongoing. Local authorities initially minimized the event by referring generally to a damaged industrial plant, but video evidence clearly showed thick black smoke rising from the fuel depots.
The targeted installation, officially known as Lukoil-Nizhegorods-nefteorgsintez or the NORSI refinery, boasts an annual crude processing capacity of approximately 15 to 17 million metric tons, ranking it among the largest refining hubs in the Russian Federation. The complex produces high-octane automotive gasoline, diesel fuel, jet propulsion kerosene, bitumen, and other specialized petroleum fractions utilized by heavy mechanized equipment and military transport.
In addition to the damage sustained by the refinery, monitoring channels reported a concurrent strike on the neighboring Novogorkovskaya combined heat and power plant. Situated directly within the Kstovo industrial belt, the power station functions as a primary regional energy backbone, supplying high-pressure steam and electricity to surrounding heavy petrochemical facilities, including the Lukoil complex.
The strike in Nizhny Novgorod is part of an intensifying asymmetric campaign by Ukrainian defense forces targeting strategic Russian refining hubs, chemical plants, and military-industrial supply chains. Over preceding nights, similar long-range drone and missile operations struck critical processing units and fuel storage sites in Ufa, Samara, and the Rostov region, disrupting national output of high-octane gasoline and specialized aviation fuel.
As the industrial sites burned, diplomatic developments also unfolded as Ukrainian leadership discussed potential multilateral frameworks to address the ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, technical teams and emergency services across the targeted regions continued to address the aftermath of the intense aerial strikes.
