Trump Accounts Automatically Enroll Millions of Children Under New Investment Policy

Eligible American youth can now access government-backed investment accounts established by recent federal legislation.

Trump Accounts have become widely available across the United States for children aged 17 and younger, with millions of eligible youth automatically enrolled as part of a sweeping tax bill from President Donald Trump's second term. The investment vehicles are designed to offer American families a new method for building financial security and supporting long-term savings for children.

Children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, are eligible for a one-time government contribution of $1,000 upon sign-up, while children under the age of 10 residing in lower-income areas may qualify for a $250 contribution. Although automatic enrollment has been completed for millions of children possessing a valid Social Security number, parents or legal guardians are still required to formally activate the accounts and request funding through the official government portal.

The accounts operate as tax-advantaged investment instruments created under provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Initially, the investment options were restricted to specific index funds, but updated regulatory rules established in September allow qualified investors to donate shares from specific companies to further fund the accounts.

The funds within a Trump Account remain inaccessible to parents and guardians, as the money is reserved exclusively for the children once they reach 18 years of age. Government officials emphasize that the primary goal is to give younger generations an early start in financial markets and wealth-building opportunities.

While families navigate the activation process, the initiative represents a major shift in federal savings policy for minors. Financial advisors recommend that parents review all available investment options and eligibility requirements to maximize the benefits provided by the federal program.

As participation grows following the Treasury Department's rollout, the administration continues to promote the accounts as a milestone for domestic economic policy and family investment planning.
