Troy Aikman Casts Doubt on TV Future Amid Contract Uncertainty with ESPN
The Hall of Fame quarterback admitted there is a 50-50 chance he will not call NFL games next season as his current deal approaches its expiration.
Troy Aikman has cast significant doubt on his broadcasting future, revealing that there is only a 50-50 chance he will continue calling NFL games on television next year. Speaking at a book-signing event in Dallas alongside veteran journalist Peter King, the Hall of Fame quarterback addressed his expiring contract with ESPN.
Aikman's future with the network remains uncertain as his current deal is set to conclude following Super Bowl 61 in March 2027. Despite serving as the lead analyst on Monday Night Football alongside longtime broadcast partner Joe Buck since 2022, Aikman noted that ESPN has not yet formally approached him about negotiating a contract extension.
The uncertainty surrounding Aikman comes on the heels of reports detailing backstage friction between him and Buck. According to reports from Front Office Sports and Puck, tension arose after details of Buck's lucrative six-year contract extension with ESPN surfaced in September, while Aikman entered the final year of his own five-year agreement without being informed of his partner's finalized deal beforehand.
Although the broadcasters have maintained a professional demeanor on the air—delivering a drama-free broadcast during a recent matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys—sources indicated that the relationship remains strained. Dylan Byers reported that Aikman had grown cold and curt with Buck prior to a direct confrontation in October, and despite ongoing dialogues with network leadership, Aikman is widely considered a strong candidate to move elsewhere next season.
Alternative landing spots for the veteran analyst appear limited. CBS recently secured a multiyear agreement with J.J. Watt to join Jim Nantz in its top broadcast booth, while Tom Brady occupies the lead analyst role at Fox under a massive long-term deal. Amazon Prime Video features Kirk Herbstreit in the Thursday Night Football booth, leaving few immediate openings for a prominent lead analyst position.
Amid the broadcasting ambiguity, speculation has also grown regarding a potential return to the Dallas Cowboys organization. Aikman acknowledged during a recent podcast appearance that his relationship with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is complicated but built on mutual respect. He stated that he would welcome a conversation if Jones believed he could help the franchise improve, though no formal opportunity has been presented.
As Aikman prepares for what could be his final stretch in the broadcast booth alongside Buck, television viewers face the distinct possibility of losing one of the game's most recognizable voices. Whether he transitions into a front-office role or steps away from the sport entirely, the coming months will determine the next chapter for the legendary quarterback.
