Torreense Secures Dramatic Europa League Victory Over Ararat

Portuguese football clubs Torreense and Benfica both achieved significant results during the fourth round of the UEFA Europa League group stage on Thursday. While Benfica continued their dominant run at the top of the standings, Torreense secured a hard-fought victory that keeps their campaign alive in the tournament.

Playing in Leiria, Torreense faced a challenging match against Ararat. The home side initially took the lead in the 13th minute through Jorge Aguirre. However, the game took a turn when Aguirre was sent off with a straight red card shortly after his goal. Ararat capitalized on the numerical advantage, with Muradyan equalizing before halftime and Bruno Wilson putting the visitors ahead 2-1 in the 58th minute.

The match reached a dramatic conclusion in the final minutes. Despite having ten players on the field—as Ararat also saw goalkeeper João Bravim receive a red card in the 76th minute—Torreense managed a late resurgence. Goals from Javi Vázquez and Drammeh in stoppage time completed an incredible 3-2 comeback for the Portuguese team, moving them to six points in the league phase.

Meanwhile, at the Estádio da Luz, Benfica maintained their flawless performance in the competition by defeating Lech Poznań 3-1. Rafa Silva opened the scoring for the Lisbon side, followed by a goal from Gianluca Prestianni, who showcased individual skill to extend the lead. Although a defensive error allowed the Polish visitors to narrow the gap to 2-1, the home team held firm to secure their fourth consecutive win.

With four rounds completed, Benfica currently leads the league phase with 12 points, having won every match played so far. The team is scheduled to face Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic in late November, followed by a home game against Greece's OFI. Their campaign will conclude in January with matches against NEC and AZ Alkmaar from the Netherlands.

Torreense, currently positioned in the playoff zone, faces a demanding schedule ahead. They are set to host Celtic in the next round before traveling to the Basque Country to face Real Sociedad. In January, the Liga 2 side will head to Poland to challenge Lech Poznań and will wrap up their group stage commitments at home against Olympiakos.
