Texas Senate and Governor Races Draw National Attention in Tight Midterm Battle

Statewide contests in Texas have tightened significantly as voters head to the polls in the 2026 midterm elections.

Control of the United States Senate remains closely contested during the 2026 midterm elections, with thirty-five seats up for grabs as Democrats look to secure a net four-seat gain to win the chamber. While major battlegrounds span the nation, the U.S. Senate race in Texas has unexpectedly emerged as a competitive contest that puts a historically Republican seat in play. Republican candidate Ken Paxton and Democratic challenger James Talarico are locked in a close race that has drawn substantial national focus.

No Democrat has successfully won a U.S. Senate election in Texas since 1988, making the prospect of a Talarico victory historic. Recent polling highlights differing views on the state of the race. While surveys by organizations like The New York Times/Siena College and AtlasIntel have shown Talarico holding a lead over Paxton, other polls conducted by groups such as Trafalgar, Quantus Insights, Rasmussen, and Fox News indicate a tied race or a narrow advantage for Paxton.

The broader political landscape in Texas has also shifted during the final stretch of the midterm campaign. In addition to the Senate battle, the state gubernatorial election between Republican incumbent Greg Abbott and Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa has tightened into a competitive race. Abbott, who has served as governor since 2015, entered the final weeks with a substantial financial advantage and 100 percent name recognition, but late polls have shown Hinojosa gaining ground.

Calvin Jillson, a professor at the Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, noted the shifting political terrain. "Republicans might wish that the election had been held yesterday, last week, or last month because the political terrain continues to shift against them," Jillson stated, adding that Abbott found himself in an unexpected horse race despite starting the cycle with a massive war chest.

President Donald Trump has campaigned actively in Texas to support Paxton, even as the race has tightened. Democrats are hopeful that voter dissatisfaction regarding the cost of living and other economic pressures may help them flip the Senate seat, alongside other competitive races nationwide where voters who previously supported Republican candidates have raised concerns.

Throughout the campaign, Talarico has framed his run as a fight for ordinary citizens against powerful interests. At a recent campaign event, he described the election as a battle between "the powers that be and the powers that ought to be," adding that his campaign represents "teachers and nurses, farmers and ranchers."

Meanwhile, Abbott has focused his message on maintaining a conservative, economically robust state that resists federal overreach while addressing household expenses. He has heavily promoted his record of job creation across three terms and the influx of corporate investment into Texas. With pollsters showing varied results and differing methodologies regarding voter turnout, both the Senate and gubernatorial contests stand as critical races to watch on election night.
