Storm Austen Batters Western Regions With High Winds and Power Outages
Twenty-three French departments were placed under orange wind warnings as the autumn storm brought gusts exceeding 140 kilometers per hour.
Storm Austen swept across western parts of the country on Friday, bringing fierce winds, heavy thunderstorms, and widespread disruptions. Météo-France placed 23 departments under orange wind alerts, spanning regions including Brittany, Normandy, the greater Paris area, and parts of northern France. The severe weather system, which arrived overnight from Thursday into Friday, resulted in structural damage, blocked roads, and significant travel cancellations.
Wind speeds reached extreme levels along the coast. The Pointe de Chemoulin meteorological station recorded a gust of 143 kilometers per hour at around 7:00 a.m. on Friday, while Fécamp in Seine-Maritime registered a peak gust of 148 kilometers per hour. Inland areas experienced sustained gales ranging from 100 to 120 kilometers per hour, leading authorities to restrict travel, close coastal access points, and shut down major infrastructure such as the Saint-Nazaire, Normandy, and Tancarville bridges.
The severe weather caused massive power outages across multiple regions. Utility provider Enedis reported that nearly 290,000 households were left without electricity by midday. Brittany was hit hardest with approximately 148,500 affected homes, followed by Normandy with 88,800, the Pays de la Loire region with 49,600, and Hauts-de-France with 7,800. Enedis deployed more than 2,000 workers to conduct repairs as soon as safety conditions allowed.
Emergency services responded to numerous incidents throughout the morning. In the Orne and Calvados departments, firefighters handled dozens of calls regarding fallen trees, blocked roadways, and downed power lines. In the commune of Argences, a 20,000-volt electrical cable fell onto a building housing a nursing home, temporarily cutting power before a backup generator could be deployed. No casualties or severe injuries were reported.
Public transportation and local events were also disrupted. Transavia canceled all morning flights departing from the airport in Nantes, while the village hosting the upcoming Route du Rhum transatlantic race in Saint-Malo was closed to the public on Friday morning. Prefectures across the impacted regions urged residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay away from coastal areas due to the high risk of falling debris and rising waters.
Meteorological forecasters indicated that the worst of the weather would begin to ease later in the afternoon. Orange wind warnings for the Paris region and parts of western France were scheduled to transition to yellow alerts by mid-afternoon, while northern departments were expected to experience a gradual decrease in wind intensity by evening. Meanwhile, weather officials warned that another potential storm system, named Boelo, could approach the region over the weekend.
