Spire Motorsports Suspends Carson Hocevar After Martinsville Incident
The driver of the No. 77 Chevrolet has been suspended for the upcoming Cup Series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway following aggressive brake-checking.
Spire Motorsports announced on Tuesday that it has suspended driver Carson Hocevar for the upcoming 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Justin Haley will step in to pilot the No. 77 Chevrolet for the team this weekend.
The disciplinary action follows a controversial on-track incident involving Hocevar and Austin Cindric during Sunday's race at Martinsville Speedway. SMT data revealed that Hocevar brake-checked in front of Cindric's No. 2 Team Penske Ford multiple times during the event.
The repeated brake-checking heavily damaged the nose of Cindric's car, forcing him out of the race and resulting in a 36th-place finish. In real time during the broadcast, spotter Tyler Green repeatedly urged Hocevar to stop the maneuver, instructions that ultimately went ignored.
Jeff Dickerson, co-owner of Spire Motorsports, explained the team's decision in a public statement. Dickerson noted that while leaving the matter entirely in NASCAR's hands would have been easier, the organization prioritized its core values of respect and integrity over points or fines.
"The way Carson conducted himself at Martinsville doesn't meet the standard we set for our drivers, team members or employees, and there are consequences for that," Dickerson stated. He added that the team still cares for and supports Hocevar, emphasizing that competing at the Cup level is a privilege requiring a high level of professionalism.
The incident drew heavy criticism from across the racing community, including 2014 Cup Series champion and FOX analyst Kevin Harvick. Speaking on his weekly show, Harvick compared the aggressive tactics to an intentional right-rear hook and described it as one of the dirtiest tricks possible on a racetrack.
Harvick pointed out that NASCAR recently softened the front bumpers of the cars for safety and competitive reasons, making them prone to caving in upon impact. He suggested that Hocevar's actions warranted a strict penalty from NASCAR, particularly because Hocevar was already under a loose probation period following previous driver interactions earlier in the season.
As Spire Motorsports prepares to field Justin Haley at Homestead, the organization remains focused on maintaining unity before concluding the season and resetting for the Daytona races in February. Hocevar also acknowledged the suspension through a brief statement shared on his Instagram story as the racing world reacts to the fallout from Martinsville.
