Spanish Socialist Party Welcomes Javier Milei with Banner at Ferraz
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the PSOE greeted the Argentine president with sharp messaging responding to his criticisms of left-wing politicians.
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) hoisted a large banner on Wednesday outside its federal headquarters on Calle Ferraz in Madrid to sarcastically welcome Argentine President Javier Milei during his private visit to the country. The banner featured the message in large white letters stating, 'Hello, Milei. Left-handers give you a welcome to Spain. The fastest-growing country in Europe.'
The provocative display incorporated the hashtag #LeftAndProud alongside a subtle graphic detail replacing the letter i in Milei's surname with a chainsaw. The chainsaw has served as the unmistakable symbol of the Argentine leader's state spending cuts, which have notably affected pensions and retirement funds in Argentina.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also addressed the Argentine leader's visit by embracing the term on social media. Sánchez updated his profile picture to display the phrase 'Left-handers and proud' and noted in a post that some individuals treat the label as an insult. He expressed pride in being left-handed and defended various policies implemented by his administration.
Sánchez listed accomplishments of his government such as pension increases, raising the minimum wage, family reconciliation measures, abortion rights, and the promotion of peace as points of contrast against Milei's political platform. In a video message, the Prime Minister stated that if increasing pensions and granting parents more time to care for their children means being left-handed, then he is proudly left-handed.
During his address at the Fórum Europa in Madrid on Wednesday, Milei escalated tensions by criticizing the Spanish government and referring to Pedro Sánchez as an unpresentable dictator. The Argentine president also targeted socialism and Kirchnerism while acknowledging the deep historical and cultural ties connecting Spain and Argentina, as well as thanking the nation for hosting thousands of Argentine immigrants.
Milei's visit to Madrid coincides with an electoral precampaign period, marking his seventh trip to Spain since taking office. Although past visits included participation in events hosted by the Vox party, organizers stated that he was not scheduled to meet with Vox leader Santiago Abascal during this trip, though meetings with general secretary Ignacio Garriga were anticipated.
Meanwhile, the area surrounding Calle Ferraz experienced separate police activity when a man attempting to set up a tent near the PSOE headquarters was ordered to dismantle it. Police sources indicated that the individual possessed a concentration authorization from the Government Delegation, though uncertainty surrounding camping permits led to instructions for his removal before he voluntarily packed his belongings.
