The sophomore safety passed away five days after sustaining a traumatic injury during a game in Arkansas.
Southern Nazarene University sophomore safety Tyler Ulrich has passed away at the age of 21, five days after suffering a traumatic injury during a college football game against Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas. His death was announced by the university in a social media statement.
Ulrich, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound player from Azle, Texas, had been hospitalized in critical condition since Saturday following the incident. He was a key contributor on defense for the team, ranking third on the squad with 39 tackles.
Dave Myrick, the play-by-play announcer for Southern Nazarene sports, recounted the distressing moments on the field when the injury occurred. Myrick noted that the play did not initially appear unusual until players began calling urgently for medical assistance, leading to a delay of nearly an hour while medical personnel attended to Ulrich.
Expressing his sorrow over the loss, Myrick told reporters that he never anticipated such an outcome and described receiving the news of Ulrich's passing as "a shot right through the heart." He added that watching the situation unfold and realizing its severity while broadcasting was extraordinarily difficult.
In the wake of the tragedy, Southern Nazarene University canceled its upcoming weekend football game against Southwestern State University to allow the campus community to grieve. The university expressed deep sorrow and noted that the campus community has been overwhelmed by an outpouring of love, concern, and support from across the nation and around the world.
The university announced that support services are available to students, faculty, and staff through the Renew Counseling Center and campus pastors. Additionally, a GoFundMe account has been established to provide financial assistance to Ulrich's family during this difficult time.
Specific details regarding the exact nature of Ulrich's injury have not been publicly disclosed. His passing marks the second tragedy of the season involving a college football player suffering a fatal game-related incident, following the death of William Jewell College running back MicahJo Barnett earlier in the year.
