Ballroom legend Shirley Ballas stepped onto the American dance floor on Tuesday night as a guest judge on "Dancing With the Stars" for its Horror Movie Night special. The head judge of Britain's "Strictly Come Dancing" joined regular panelists Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough. The appearance marked a rare high-profile ballroom reunion, placing Ballas directly across the judging desk from her son, professional dancer Mark Ballas, who is competing in the show's 35th season alongside television personality Maura Higgins.

Taking the floor for a contemporary routine set to "Cry Little Sister" from "The Lost Boys," Mark Ballas and Higgins sought to build upon their strong showing from the previous week's Dedication Night. However, Shirley made it clear before the broadcast that her family connection would not yield easy praise. Reviewing the performance, she commended the pair's lifts and noted the overall power of the routine, but she offered technical critiques regarding footwork. The couple earned a score of 32 out of 40, reflecting her rigorous standards.

Mark had previously acknowledged that his mother rarely softens her professional assessments, and other couples felt the full weight of her scrutiny throughout the evening. Actress Julia Stiles and pro Ezra Sosa opened the competition with an Argentine tango inspired by "The Omen." While the audience responded with enthusiasm, Shirley criticized the pair's posture and leg control, commenting that she wanted sharper movements and faster execution. Shirley awarded the routine a 4 out of 10, contrasting sharply with the 7s and 8 given by her fellow judges. The low mark elicited boos from the studio audience and drew a playful mock from Stiles' family in the crowd. Shirley also issued a 4 to Tatyana Ali and Jan Ravnik, citing a lack of paso doble content.

Despite the harsh assessments distributed across the board, the evening produced the season's first perfect score. Harry Shum Jr. and partner Jenna Johnson dazzled the panel with a contemporary routine inspired by the film "Saw," earning straight 10s for a total of 40 points. The broadcast also marked the return of pro dancer Val Chmerkovskiy following a one-week suspension, as he reunited with partner Jenna Dewan. At the conclusion of the double elimination episode, combined totals sent Jackson Olson and Emma Slater, as well as Tyler Cameron and Sharna Burgess, home from the competition.

Shirley's presence at the judges' table held deep personal significance beyond her son's participation. Derek Hough and co-host Julianne Hough both lived with the Ballas family in London during their youth while training at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Shirley previously referred to those training years as rigorous, helping mold both her son and Derek into multiple-time champions. Earlier in the year, Shirley and Mark also worked together on the judging panel of the spin-off series "Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro," where they scouted talent that eventually led dancer Adele Zaikman to join the main show's cast.

Her American guest appearance sparked rumors in the United Kingdom regarding a permanent move across the Atlantic, mirroring the dual-show schedules previously managed by Tonioli and the late Len Goodman. Shirley, however, firmly dismissed suggestions that she plans to leave British television. Speaking about her transatlantic commitments, she stated she is taking on double duty this season by flying between both countries, confirming that she remains entirely dedicated to her long-standing post on "Strictly Come Dancing."
