Severe Autumn Storm Manja Batters Northern Germany
Sturmtief Manja brings high winds, ferry cancellations, and storm surge warnings across northern coastal regions.
A powerful autumn storm designated as Storm Manja swept across northern Germany, bringing severe winds, heavy rainfall, and coastal flooding threats. The severe weather system, originating from Scotland and following closely behind Storm Luise, prompted official storm surge warnings from the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) for the German North Sea coast.
The German Weather Service (DWD) reported winds reaching gale-force levels, with gusts hitting up to 150 kilometers per hour in exposed coastal areas. The severe weather impacted travel infrastructure significantly as holiday weekend travelers attempted to return home. Ferry services to various islands, including Langeoog, Wangerooge, and Helgoland, experienced heavy disruptions, schedule adjustments, or complete suspensions.
Rail transport also faced major interruptions. Deutsche Bahn temporarily halted its Sylt-Shuttle train services between Niebüll and Westerland due to dangerous wind speeds reaching up to 120 kilometers per hour near vulnerable embankments. Private rail operator RDC similarly suspended its auto-train services to and from Sylt, while cruise operators like TUI Cruises brought ships back to Hamburg ahead of schedule.
Despite the severe conditions, emergency services across northern Germany reported relatively few major incidents. Local fire departments and police authorities in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Bremen, and Lower Saxony logged numerous weather-related calls, primarily involving fallen trees, broken branches, and displaced construction fences. A cyclist sustained minor injuries after being struck by a falling tree branch near Witzwort in Schleswig-Holstein.
Coastal water levels rose significantly as the storm pushed ashore. Authorities warned that water levels along the North Sea coast and the Elbe estuary would peak well above average high tides. In Hamburg, police issued official storm surge alerts via the Katwarn application, anticipating elevated water levels in the Elbe area that would cause flooding around the historic fish market.
While the immediate threat from Storm Manja began to ease as the weather system progressed, transportation operators urged passengers to check online schedules before attempting to travel. The disruptions coincided with the end of the autumn school holidays in Lower Saxony, compounding transit challenges for thousands of returning visitors across the affected coastal regions.
