Seiko and Mazda Release New Minimalist Chronograph Watch in Japan
The quartz timepiece draws inspiration from vehicle instrument clusters and is currently available exclusively in the Japanese market.
Japanese watchmaker Seiko and automotive manufacturer Mazda have introduced their latest collaborative timepiece, the Seiko x Mazda Chronograph Watch, designated as model BF9504. The new release departs from traditional heavy-handed motorsport aesthetics, instead opting for a streamlined, minimalist look designed to complement everyday wear.
Priced at 69,300 yen, which is approximately $440 USD, the watch is currently available exclusively in Japan. It was launched through Mazda's official online store on October 23, followed by a release at physical dealerships on October 29. International buyers looking to acquire the piece must rely on proxy shipping services.
The design philosophy behind the watch follows what Mazda terms the "aesthetics of subtraction." Rather than relying on overt automotive branding or carbon-fiber textures, the timepiece takes visual cues directly from the standard instrument clusters found in Mazda vehicles. The dark gray, brushed-texture dial features vertically oriented black subdials, a tachymeter ring with red and white accents, and a quirky date window positioned between the four and five o'clock markers.
To maintain brand consistency, Seiko utilized Mazda's proprietary "Mazda Type" font for the dial lettering. Additional automotive touches include a red tip on the stopwatch second hand and a matching red ring on the crown. The caseback and dial also feature an inscription noting the automaker's founding: "ESTD 1920 HIROSHIMA, JAPAN."
Housed in a stainless steel case measuring 39.2mm wide, 47.2mm tall, and 11.4mm thick, the watch is protected by a curved Hardlex crystal, which is Seiko's proprietary convex scratch-resistant mineral glass. The timepiece features an ordinary battery-powered quartz mechanism providing an expected battery life of about three years, with an accuracy rating of plus or minus 15 seconds per month.
For practical everyday use, the chronograph offers a 10 ATM water-resistance rating, alongside a LumiBright coating applied strictly to the hour and minute hands for visibility in low-light conditions.
The watch ships with two interchangeable 20mm straps packaged inside a special box featuring Mazda's brand colors. The first option is a stainless steel bracelet that brings the total weight of the watch to 108 grams, while the second option is a black cowhide leather strap finished with brown painted edges.
