SBI Reports Q2 Profit Growth Driven by Strong Loan Advances and Lower Provisions
State Bank of India posted solid second-quarter results supported by robust lending across sectors, even as analysts noted softer underlying metrics.
State Bank of India (SBI) reported a solid performance in the second quarter, aided by healthy loan growth and a reduction in provisions. Chairman CS Setty noted that the Indian economy remains on a consistent growth path, backed by robust consumption, investment, and sustained activity across the manufacturing and services sectors.
Despite pointing to a healthy underlying momentum, Setty emphasized that the institution remains watchful of developments concerning food and energy prices, currency markets, and the broader global environment. He specifically highlighted that the ongoing rabi sowing season requires close monitoring due to heightened El Nino concerns and potential impacts on the rural economy.
SBI's profitability during the second quarter was underpinned by strong loan growth, with total advances increasing by 18% to Rs 52.08 lakh crore. The expansion was propelled by double-digit growth across all segments, led by a 23% jump in agriculture loans, a 22% increase in SME loans, and a 16% rise in corporate advances.
Driven by this lending momentum, the bank's net interest income (NII)—the difference between interest earned on loans and that paid for deposits—climbed 15% year-on-year to reach Rs 49,143 crore. Furthermore, during a quarter when many financial institutions faced notable margin pressures, SBI successfully maintained its net interest margin (NIM) at 2.90%, compared to 2.92% in the same period the previous year.
However, not all financial metrics showed year-on-year gains. Non-interest income fell by 5% to Rs 19,066 crore, despite the bank recording a gain of Rs 7,288 crore from a stake sale in its mutual fund arm, SBI Funds Management, during the quarter. Declines in treasury profits along with lower forex and derivatives income weighed down the non-interest revenue.
Analysts offered mixed views on the broader implications of the financial report. According to a note from Bernstein analysts, SBI's headline earnings growth masked a softer underlying quarter, with lower credit costs and stake-sale gains serving as the primary supports for profitability. The analysts pointed out that the healthy loan growth and a sequential NIM recovery failed to lift the underlying pre-provision operating profit, which dipped 1% year-on-year amid weaker other income and rising expenses.
