Sarah Palin Mourns Late Partner and Former NHL Star Ron Duguay
The former Alaska governor shared a heartfelt tribute following the hockey icon's death from stage IV colon cancer at the age of 69.
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is mourning the loss of her longtime partner, former National Hockey League star Ron Duguay, who passed away on October 22, 2026, at the age of 69 following a battle with stage IV colon cancer. Duguay's family and loved ones announced his passing after a grueling health journey that began with his diagnosis in late 2024.
Palin took to social media shortly after his death to share a touching tribute, posting an image of Duguay in a New York Rangers jersey alongside a personal message. "It's with a shattered heart but with deep peace knowing that Ron is with Jesus now," she wrote on her Instagram Story, adding, "He fought so hard. Love never ends."
Just days before his passing, Palin had asked her followers for continued prayers while visiting Duguay at the City of Hope Cancer Treatment Center in Southern California. She posted a photo from his hospital bed showing her holding his hand, alongside another inspirational quote reflecting on her faith during his final days.
Duguay's daughter, Shay Thomas, had previously spoken about Palin's unwavering support throughout her father's medical treatments. Despite the challenges of maintaining a long-distance relationship—with Palin residing in Alaska and Duguay based in Florida—Thomas commended Palin for her dedication, noting that she would readily catch red-eye flights to assist with hospital stays and family needs.
Duguay enjoyed a notable 12-season career in the NHL between 1977 and 1989. Selected 13th overall by the New York Rangers in the 1977 draft, he became a fan favorite known for his distinctive flowing hair, charismatic personality, and standout play on the ice. Over his 864-game career, he also played for the Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Los Angeles Kings, accumulating 274 goals and 346 assists.
The New York Rangers organization joined the broader hockey community in honoring his legacy. In a public statement, the franchise remembered Duguay as one of the most popular players in team history, noting that his signature style and tenacity captivated fans at Madison Square Garden.
Palin and Duguay first connected in 2022 after he reached out to offer advice during her defamation trial against The New York Times. What began as a supportive friendship quickly blossomed into a romance, with Palin frequently expressing how safe and comfortable she felt around the former athlete.
Family members announced that a celebration of life for Duguay will be scheduled and announced at a later date.
