Rheinmetall Shares Plunge Following Revised Financial Forecasts
The German defense contractor saw its stock value drop by approximately 16 percent after lowering its annual revenue and profit margin expectations for the second time in three months.
Shares of the German defense giant Rheinmetall experienced a significant decline on Thursday, falling by roughly 16 percent during trading in Frankfurt. This sharp downturn occurred after the company announced it was revising its financial projections downward for the second time in just three months.
The defense firm, which specializes in the production of tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery ammunition, adjusted its annual revenue forecast from a previous range of 13.7 to 14.2 billion euros down to approximately 13.2 billion euros. Additionally, the company now expects an operating profit margin of 18.5 percent, a decrease from its earlier estimate of 19 percent.
Company officials attributed these financial adjustments to ongoing challenges, including delays in a major German military order for armored vehicles and complications regarding the delivery of artillery ammunition. These operational hurdles have hindered the company's ability to meet its previously stated financial goals.
JPMorgan analyst David Perry noted that while the company's underlying strategy remains sound, the previous targets were likely unrealistic given the current circumstances. The market reaction was swift, leaving the stock as the worst performer in the DAX index on Thursday morning.
This recent decline marks a notable shift for Rheinmetall, which had seen its stock price soar by more than 850 percent over the last five years. The company had benefited significantly from increased European defense spending following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with the stock previously delivering an average annual return of 114 percent over the past four years.
Despite the recent volatility, the company's financial reports indicate that revenue remains strong. In the third quarter, Rheinmetall reported a 32 percent increase in revenue to 3.15 billion euros, while its operating profit grew by 62 percent. However, even before Thursday's sharp decline, the stock had already fallen by approximately 35 percent since the beginning of the year.
The broader German market showed modest gains on Thursday, with the DAX index rising by 0.29 percent to 26,515 points, remaining just shy of its record high of 26,618 points set in August. While other sectors experienced renewed investor confidence following political developments in the United States, Rheinmetall remained an outlier due to its specific internal production and supply chain challenges.
