Republican Mike Mazzei wins Oklahoma gubernatorial race
Former state senator Mike Mazzei secured the victory over Democratic state Representative Cyndi Munson, keeping the governor's office in Republican hands.
Republican Mike Mazzei has been elected as Oklahoma's next governor, defeating Democratic state Representative Cyndi Munson by a margin of roughly six percentage points. Mazzei, a financial planner and former state senator, will succeed term-limited Republican Governor Kevin Stitt when he takes the oath of office on January 11 at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
Mazzei secured his party's nomination in August following a primary runoff against Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond, receiving an endorsement from President Donald Trump during the primary season. Throughout his campaign, Mazzei emphasized fiscal policies, centering his platform on eliminating the state income tax, lowering property taxes for seniors and veterans, and creating high-paying jobs to spur economic growth.
During his victory speech in Tulsa, Mazzei thanked voters and his opponent, praising Munson for her dedication as a legislator. He outlined his upcoming priorities for the state, which include removing economic barriers for residents, enhancing public safety, and supporting local communities. "No matter what hard times you are dealing with, never, ever give up," Mazzei told supporters.
Cyndi Munson, the Democratic leader in the Oklahoma House, ran her campaign on key issues including affordability, public education, access to healthcare, and opposition to broad income tax cuts that she argued could harm public services. Despite losing the statewide contest, Munson performed strongly in the state's two most populous counties, Oklahoma and Tulsa, securing the highest vote share for a Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Oklahoma in nearly two decades.
Mazzei's victory ensures the governor's seat remains under conservative leadership as Republicans continue their broad dominance across Oklahoma's statewide offices. Alongside the gubernatorial race, voters also decided several other executive positions, returning Republican candidates to offices including lieutenant governor, attorney general, state superintendent, and insurance commissioner.
While statewide executive offices remained strictly under Republican control, the midterms also brought notable shifts within the state legislature. Democratic candidates succeeded in flipping five state House districts from red to blue by unseating incumbent Republicans in urban and suburban areas of Oklahoma City and Tulsa, yielding a more balanced debate moving into the next legislative session.
In addition to candidate races, Oklahoma voters rejected two legislatively referred state questions on the ballot. State Question 845, which proposed altering the composition of the Judicial Nominating Commission, and State Question 847, which aimed to lower property tax assessment caps, were both defeated by wide margins following concerns raised by local officials regarding public funding and institutional oversight.
