Reliance Jio Targets Global Expansion Through International Partnerships
The Indian telecommunications giant is pursuing an asset-light model to offer its 5G and software technologies to foreign operators.
Reliance Jio is setting its sights on global expansion by targeting between 10 and 15 substantial international partnerships to export its advanced telecommunications technology. Managing director Akash Ambani told analysts that the company aims to secure meaningful scale abroad rather than entering foreign markets through small arrangements.
Rather than competing directly with overseas operators or acquiring foreign infrastructure, Jio plans to operate as a technology and managed-services partner. The company intends to offer foreign operators its 5G network technology, fixed wireless access, unlicensed-band radio and software systems, including operations support systems and business support systems.
The international push comes as Jio reports robust financial health. During the first half of the 2027 fiscal year, the company generated free cash flow of 32,130 crore Indian rupees, representing a 98% increase compared to the same period a year earlier. Furthermore, net debt dropped significantly to 8,822 crore rupees at the end of September.
Management noted that the company's peak network investment phase is largely behind it, giving Jio the financial flexibility to invest in technology development and global collaborations. Jio Platforms officially listed on the stock exchange on October 28, 2026, establishing itself as one of the country's most valuable publicly traded entities.
On the domestic front, Jio is adopting a measured approach regarding mobile tariff increases. Ambani stated that mobile tariff adjustments will be considered when market conditions are appropriate, emphasizing that higher recharge prices are not the company's sole growth strategy. Instead, Jio is prioritizing digital services and increased customer monetization.
The company's average revenue per user reached 218.8 rupees per month in the September 2026 quarter, marking a 3.5% increase year-on-year. Chief strategy officer Anshuman Thakur highlighted that organic growth is being driven by shifts in customer mix and higher consumption of digital services offered separately from basic connectivity.
As Jio prepares for its next phase of growth, investors will be monitoring whether ongoing international discussions translate into formal commercial agreements. The success of its global strategy will depend on navigating local regulatory requirements, network compatibility, and the formalization of partnerships with overseas telecom operators.
