Reese Witherspoon Cuts Half of Hello Sunshine Staff Following Buyback

The production company will now narrow its primary focus to television, film, and book club projects after reducing its workforce by approximately 30 employees.

Reese Witherspoon has laid off roughly 50 percent of the staff at her production banner, Hello Sunshine, following her recent corporate buyback of the company. The workforce reduction impacts about 30 employees as the business shifts its strategic direction just weeks after the actress regained control of the enterprise.

Earlier this month, Witherspoon successfully reacquired Hello Sunshine from Candle Media with backing from the French conglomerate Mediawan. The transaction allowed the actress to purchase the banner back for a fraction of the $900 million that Candle Media had paid when it acquired a controlling stake in 2021. Representatives for Hello Sunshine declined to comment on the restructuring.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the company will now concentrate principally on film and television projects alongside the popular Reese's Book Club brand. Meanwhile, the direct-to-consumer division of the company has been largely dismantled.

Despite the recent change in leadership under Witherspoon and Mediawan, Hello Sunshine experienced multiple rounds of staff reductions over the previous two years while under Candle Media's ownership. Those prior cuts particularly affected the unscripted department and the Gen Z lifestyle brand Sunnie. Candle Media also shuttered the children and animation division in 2023, and subsequently consolidated live-action operations into Candle Studios.

Upon reacquiring her company, Witherspoon expressed high hopes for the future in an official statement. "Mediawan has built a global, independent studio by putting creators first. That has always been my vision for Hello Sunshine," she wrote. She added that she was deeply proud of what the team had built and expressed gratitude to her previous partners.

In parallel with the company restructuring, Witherspoon remains active in her entertainment endeavors, including preparations for the upcoming third season of HBO's hit series Big Little Lies. The production recently initiated a limited one-day shoot to secure a California tax credit, while producers work to align the busy schedules of the show's star-studded cast for a full production kickoff next year.
